About The Position

The Assistant Closing Manager at BJ's Wholesale Club provides leadership and direction, driving club performance, particularly during closing hours. This role oversees the Recovery, Utility, and Perishable departments (Produce, Meat, Bakery, Deli, Dairy/Freezer), as well as overnight prep, ensuring all areas are clean, stocked, and ready for morning opening. The manager is responsible for maintaining policies and procedures, delivering a positive member service experience, ensuring Grand Opening Look Daily (GOLD) club conditions, and serving as Manager on Duty (MOD) as needed, taking full responsibility for club operations, team leadership, and Member engagement during assigned shifts. Key aspects include assisting in audit compliance, collaborating with Business Partners, and overseeing onboarding, certification, and training for food safety and operational excellence.

Requirements

  • A valid ServSafe Food Safety Certification is required and must be maintained in good standing.
  • In Florida, this role must obtain a qualifier certification through the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services for retail propane oversight.
  • Must complete yearly certification for a forklift license.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma required.
  • Basic computer proficiency (MS Word, Excel, Email) required.
  • Open shift availability required.
  • Maintain all training and required certifications.
  • Maintain regular, predictable, full attendance.

Nice To Haves

  • 2 years of experience in retail, supermarket, or warehouse perishable operations preferred.
  • Experience in managing inventory turnover and waste reduction strategies.
  • College degree preferred.
  • Familiarity with AI tools, including ChatGPT.

Responsibilities

  • Meet or exceed Labor and Supply Plans for the club.
  • Drive performance and profitability using reporting to identify trends and opportunities.
  • Acquire deep knowledge of key metrics and reporting for total club and department performance.
  • Actively walk the floor during closing hours to observe execution, engage with Members, and support team performance.
  • Ensure full-functioning departments through closing, including registers and perishable stations.
  • Drive in-stock and freshness by monitoring evening inventory, product rotation, culling, and merchandising.
  • Enforce sanitation standards, confirming completion of daily cleaning checklists and safety protocols.
  • Lead Recovery team productivity and coach clerks for efficient task execution.
  • Utilize various tools (Hot List, NAFS, electronic reports, etc.) to validate execution and drive efficiency.
  • Support audit readiness by ensuring all sanitation, cold chain, and safety checklists are completed daily.
  • Maintain equipment functionality by identifying and escalating issues.
  • Coach onboarding and certifications, reinforcing ServSafe, PPE compliance, and department-specific training.
  • Drive improvement in underperforming areas by ensuring follow-through on action plans.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with other managers and leads to improve closing routines and member experience.
  • Conduct quality and date checks, removing damaged or outdated items.
  • Utilize BJ’s MY WORK system to execute assigned tasks and ensure compliance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by club leadership.
  • Operate safely and efficiently, following all safety protocols and procedures.
  • Maintain regular, predictable, full attendance.
