About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care department of Safety and Security is seeking a Hospital Security Officer to perform duties needed to maintain a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, and staff in the buildings and grounds of the University of Iowa Health Care. This role involves providing exceptional customer service, assisting with wayfinding, conducting security checks, performing incident investigations, responding to emergencies, and maintaining surveillance. The officer will also be responsible for enforcing institution policies, operating security systems, and providing escorts. The University of Iowa Health Care is recognized as one of the best hospitals in the United States and is Iowa's only comprehensive academic medical center.

Requirements

  • Two years’ experience in security and safety, or fire safety, or law enforcement; or One year of post-high school education related to security and safety and one year of experience in security and safety; or Two years of post-high school education related to security and safety
  • Possession of appropriate driver’s license and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety Standards.
  • Ability to obtain basic certification from International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) within 6 months of hire and maintain certification for duration of employment.
  • Ability to walk and climb stairs.
  • Ability to lift and carry fifty pounds.
  • Ability to work outside in extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to see and hear accurately in both day and nighttime conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years of customer service experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office computer software applications (i.e. Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc)
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional customer service to patients, visitors, and staff entering the hospital
  • Assist with wayfinding and information to patients, visitors, and staff
  • Perform security checks, patrol facility, and monitor special assignments
  • Conduct incident investigations and provide documentation for follow-up
  • Respond to and assist in all incidents regarding safety and security
  • Respond to lock/unlock doors, troubleshoot elevator problems and extricate as needed, and assist in traffic/parking enforcement
  • Respond to and resolve emergencies such as fire, HazMat, and security alarms
  • Provide security surveillance of institution, including physiatric units
  • Maintain a working knowledge of computers to process data, operate fire alarm systems, and security systems
  • Escort to parking ramps and outlying areas
  • Perform safekeeping procedures
  • Provide effective oral and written communication
  • Enforce all institution policies and procedures
