About The Position

A hospital-based clinical laboratory in Smyrna, Tennessee is seeking an experienced Hospital Laboratory Director to oversee laboratory operations, staff leadership, regulatory compliance, and financial performance. This leadership role is responsible for directing all laboratory programs, ensuring high-quality diagnostic services, maintaining regulatory compliance, and supporting patient care through efficient laboratory operations. The position requires a certified Medical Technologist with strong leadership experience in hospital laboratory management. The ideal candidate is a proactive leader capable of managing complex laboratory operations while fostering a culture of quality, collaboration, and operational excellence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Biomedical Science, Biology, or Chemistry
  • National certification as a Medical Technologist (MT or MLS)
  • State laboratory license where required
  • 3+ years progressive laboratory management experience in complex clinical laboratory operations
  • Leadership experience managing laboratory staff

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or related field
  • Experience in a hospital clinical laboratory environment

Responsibilities

  • Direct laboratory operations, programs, and departmental activities to meet organizational and regulatory requirements
  • Ensure proper staffing through recruitment, orientation, competency validation, and ongoing professional development
  • Provide leadership through coaching, performance feedback, and staff recognition
  • Develop and execute strategies to achieve departmental goals related to service quality, regulatory compliance, financial performance, and patient satisfaction
  • Monitor laboratory financial performance including budget management and resource utilization
  • Prepare and present Monthly Operating Review reports
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards including CAP, CLIA, JCAHO, FDA, and CMS
  • Develop and maintain laboratory policies and procedures with annual review and updates
  • Manage vendor relationships and laboratory supply contracts in coordination with supply chain leadership
  • Implement communication strategies to ensure departmental alignment and transparency
  • Delegate responsibilities appropriately while ensuring adherence to regulatory guidelines
  • Evaluate team performance and provide coaching, training, and operational guidance
