The Hospital Clerk is responsible for efficient and courteous registration, transfer, and discharge of patients, and maintaining current and accurate patient accounts receivable ensuring that proper payors are billed and claims go out clean. This role serves as the general receptionist for the hospital, operating communication systems, and providing general information concerning the hospital and/or patients' conditions in accordance with hospital and HIPPA guidelines. The clerk also maintains a roster of inpatients and reports daily on admissions and discharges. They interview patients to determine payment arrangements and perform tasks to implement, maintain, and produce patient billing, records, and reports efficiently and timely. Additionally, the Hospital Clerk answers inquiries on patient accounts, advises patients on insurance benefits, performs cashier duties, balances the drawer daily, and assists with account write-offs. They are responsible for printing claims daily, operating various office equipment, and contacting relevant parties for information needed for billings. The role may also involve pulling patient charts, assembling discharges, and filing charts. The clerk checks daily reports for appropriate charges and maintains patient accounts on the STAR System. Proficiency in operating computer systems (STAR, Claims Administrator, Laser Arc, Meda), navigating websites for insurance, and providing spreadsheet reports and electronic correspondence is required. Attendance at workshops to stay updated on changes is also expected.
