About The Position

The hospice volunteer plays a vital role in enhancing the quality of care delivered to patients and families. Volunteers may provide direct patient/family care, bereavement support, or administrative assistance, supporting the hospice agency's goal of quality patient/family care. Assignments are matched to the volunteer's experience, training, and interests, and all work is performed under the supervision of an agency employee.

Requirements

  • H.S. Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
  • Less than 6 months of relevant experience
  • Completion of Volunteer Training Program
  • Mature, non-judgmental, caring, people-oriented individual supportive of the home health concept of care

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of the death and dying process
  • Knowledge of hospice and end-of-life care

Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance to the hospice program and/or patient/family in accordance with designated activities
  • Provide input into the Plan of Care and Interdisciplinary Group meetings as applicable
  • Communicate availability and schedule changes to supervisor
  • Accurately document services provided as trained and instructed by the hospice agency
  • Maintain strict patient and family confidentiality
  • Communicate any changes in patient/family status or observations to assigned supervisor and/or Administrator
  • Attend at least four (4) in-services per year
  • Complete all mandatory trainings
  • Submit annual renewable documents timely
  • Participate in community outreach projects for the agency
  • Knowledge of the death and dying process
  • Interacts with families in a caring and compassionate manner.
  • Assists with arrangements after death, memorial services, and community education on end-of-life issues
  • Maintains strict bereaved confidentiality
  • Knowledge of hospice and end-of-life care
  • Provides companionship and activities (reading, life review, games, yard work, animal care, respite, etc.)
  • Records accurate, legible, timely, and objective documentation of each patient/family encounter.
  • Schedules regular visits with patient/family as designated in the Plan of Care
  • Provides respite care for family
  • Provides office support for direct patient care (creating teaching materials, mailings, filing, etc.)
  • Completes assignments in a timely manner; paperwork is neat, thorough, and legible
