About The Position

The North Carolina Zoo is seeking an energetic, passionate and knowledgeable Horticulture Supervisor with supervisory experience to join its Exterior Horticulture Team. This position will oversee staff in the Asia (and future Australia) continents who perform daily planning, installations and/or maintenance duties related to the exterior plant collection, compost operations, and irrigation work. This position will supervise both permanent and occasional seasonal and volunteer staff. The Zoo’s plant collections are one of the essential elements of the Zoo’s purpose to save, understand and interpret the world’s natural resources. The Asia collection will consist of more than 5,000 plants, trees, shrubs, perennials, grasses and ferns and is the first continent established in our Botanical Garden Accreditation.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in horticultural or related degree from an appropriately accredited institution and up to three years of experience in the development and implementation of landscape plans and grounds maintenance; or An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Required to participate in the Zoo’s Occupational Health Program due to contact with animal containment areas.
  • Must be able to lift between 15-30 pounds of aggregate material to a height of 18 inches and transport it laterally at a distance of 4.5 feet on a frequent basis with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to perform the physical demands of the job with or without reasonable accommodation for extended and irregular periods, under adverse conditions in all extremes of weather.
  • Ability to obtain a NC State Public Operator’s Pesticide License within 9 months of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated working and supervisory experience in cultivating and maintaining plant collections such as watering procedures, Integrated Pest Management, pruning and fertilization.
  • Demonstrated ability in the developing of work plans, goal and standards setting, prioritization, scheduling and production/quality reviews.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and supervise landscaping and horticulture operations, providing guidance and support to staff to ensure high-quality results.
  • Apply expert knowledge of plants, landscape design, and horticulture planning to guide project development and execution.
  • Operate and manage the safe use of large landscaping equipment, ensuring compliance with operational and safety standards.
  • Clearly articulate, present, and communicate ideas and project plans to staff, internal stakeholders, and external customers.
  • Work independently and collaboratively to lead teams in completing landscaping and horticulture tasks, providing direction and oversight as needed.
  • Utilize Microsoft Office applications to prepare reports, manage schedules, track project progress, and support daily operations.
