Homeless Services Specialist
About The Position
This position supports the operation of a shelter site and provides assistance to individuals experiencing homelessness who are utilizing the shelter services. The role involves daily setup and breakdown of the shelter, including managing cots, cleaning, and inventorying supplies. Responsibilities also include assisting with the intake process, data collection and entry into the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS), coordinating transportation, serving food, and supporting de-escalation and client engagement efforts. The specialist will also contribute to creating a welcoming environment for all shelter guests.
Requirements
- Ability to follow and implement requests received from supervisor with little or no supervision.
- Ability to adapt to change, negotiate compromise and tolerate ambiguity.
- Ability to build effective relationships with others who can help with work related goals.
- Ability to be sensitive in human interactions to diversity inclusiveness.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Nice To Haves
- Previous experience working in a Shelter or relative experience preferred.
Responsibilities
- Support the operation of the shelter site and help meet the needs of persons experiencing homelessness who are staying at the shelter.
- Set up and break down the shelter site daily, including placement of mats/cots, cleaning of mats/cots, moving and inventorying shelter supplies.
- Assist with the shelter intake processes, including data collection and data entry into the County’s Homeless Management Information System (HMIS).
- Assist with the coordination of transportation services to and/or from the shelter site.
- Serve and distribute food to shelter guests.
- Support the Shelter Site Lead, Shelter Director and relevant partners in shelter guest de-escalation and other client engagement efforts, as needed.
- Work with the Shelter Site Lead and Shelter Director to create a welcome environment for all shelter guests.
