About The Position

Reporting to the Supervisor, Intake and Operations, the Home Support Worker assists tenants to complete activities of daily living. The Housing Support Worker follows a pre-determined service plan that involves a combination of cleaning, cooking support, and essential homemaking tasks. The Home Support Worker may be required to work with clients who smoke or have pets in the home. The Home Support Worker is responsible for observing and reporting any changes in tenants’ health or social status and for keeping records of each tenant’s service plan. The Home Support Worker responds to all requests for emergency assistance and is responsible for assessing the type of emergency and intervention required. The Home Support Worker should be capable of working with clients with diverse social, cultural, and language backgrounds, including clients with high needs, such as those experiencing substance use and mental health challenges.

Requirements

  • 1-2 years experience with Home Support.
  • Strong written and verbal English language communication skills; other languages an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, personal care, and household management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be qualified to work in Canada legally for the employer.
  • Able to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening check with a ‘Clear’ or satisfactory result that meets the operational requirements of the Agency.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience of working with people experiencing homelessness or who have challenges in obtaining and maintaining housing are considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of gerontology, mental health, and substance use an asset.
  • Emergency First Aid/CPR certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist tenants with household management tasks such as laundry, grocery shopping, bed-making, washroom cleaning, vacuuming, mopping, and meal preparation.
  • Teach and model independent living skills.
  • Keep supervisor and manager up to date on changes in tenants’ situation.
  • Paperwork and/or administrative duties may be required on certain shifts.
  • Attend staff meetings, performance reviews, and supervision meetings as scheduled.
  • Participate in briefings to relief staff during shift changes.
  • Attend-in-house training opportunities as scheduled.
