About The Position

State Department Federal Credit Union is seeking a Home Equity Loan Officer to assist members with their home equity lending needs by originating, analyzing, and processing Home Equity Lines of Credit and fixed home equity loan requests. This position reviews applications and supporting documentation for accuracy and completeness, explains loan programs, requirements, and conditions to members, and provides timely updates throughout the loan process. The Home Equity Loan Officer is responsible for applying SDFCU policies, regulatory requirements, and established lending guidelines while maintaining accurate loan records and supporting a positive member experience. This role also works collaboratively with internal teams, vendors, and settlement agents and identifies appropriate opportunities to cross-sell additional Credit Union products and services based on member needs.

Requirements

  • Minimum of five years of related work experience in a specific lending field, such as real estate lending, consumer lending, or financial services, is required.
  • A two-year college degree with a mortgage, financial, or business concentration, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of two years of customer service experience with proven sales and service skills.
  • Thorough working knowledge of underwriting criteria and applicable lending laws and federal regulations governing consumer, credit card, and mortgage loan programs, including those set by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).
  • Thorough knowledge of the Fair Housing Act and consumer protection laws, such as FCRA, ECOA, TILA/RESPA, TRID, and the SAFE Act.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to use sound judgment and diplomacy and to work independently with very limited supervision.
  • Ability to adapt to a constantly changing work environment and demonstrate flexibility.

Responsibilities

  • Originates Home Equity Lines of Credit (HELOCs) and fixed home equity loans that conform to SDFCU policies and products, as well as National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) regulations and guidelines. This includes accurately disclosing and explaining loan programs to members and ensuring that members’ loan requests are handled accordingly. This also includes accepting applications by phone and internet.
  • Verifies payment calculations, credit scores, credit tiers and pricing, collateral, and credit reports, and makes any necessary updates in the SDFCU lending system.
  • Reviews and analyzes loan applications and supporting documentation received through branch, telephone, email, internet, and mail channels to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Originates loan requests in the SDFCU lending system and provides members with appropriate follow-up information and guidance throughout the process.
  • Maintains current knowledge of credit scoring, pricing, rate adjustments, product changes, loan promotions, and government agency guideline updates that affect home equity lending.
  • Reviews appraisals, title reports, and other processing documents for accuracy.
  • Communicates professionally and completes assigned tasks accurately and timely with vendors, including attorneys, title agents, and external audit firms.
  • Ensures loan settlements are handled professionally and in accordance with established regulations and guidelines.
  • Verifies HMDA data on each home equity loan or line of credit. Ensures data is updated accurately and timely in SDFCU lending systems.
  • Prepares reports for management or government agencies as needed.
  • Coordinates loan disbursements with members and settlement agents as needed.
  • Reviews and responds to quality control audits to ensure loans meet established guidelines, policies, and documentation standards.
  • Attends real estate lending seminars/training programs as requested by SDFCU to remain informed on changes and trends in the marketplace.
  • Educates appropriate Credit Union employees on the loan process, including debt-to-income and payment ratios, loan approvals and denials, credit scoring programs, and pricing.
