About The Position

To help each participating student achieve a high level of skill development, and create an appreciation for the values of student connectedness, discipline and sportsmanship, and an increased level of self-esteem.

Requirements

  • Coaching in the particular sport, with at least 3 years of experience.
  • Experience at the middle/high school level preferred.
  • First aid, CPR, and Blood Borne Pathogen training is required.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, parents or employees of the district.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Exhibit qualities of leadership and organizational ability and reflect a spirit of cooperation in working with staff and school administration.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in a specific field.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in verbal and written form.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements, WIAA requirements, and School Board policies.
  • Ability to use computers and other technology to accomplish job responsibilities.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

  • The specific vision requirements of the job include good depth perception and occasionally being able to see objects/persons at a distance.
  • While performing the duties of the job the employee frequently is required to hear conversation in quiet as well as a noisy environment and be able to tell where a sound is coming from.
  • The employee must be able to communicate to the team in order to give directions.

Responsibilities

  • Coaches individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport involved.
  • Plans, schedules, and attends a regular program of practice in season.
  • Oversees the safety conditions of the facility or area in which assigned sport is conducted.
  • Establishes participant criteria based on student athlete skill, ability, and eligibility and informs parents and participants of these criteria.
  • Works collaboratively with the athletic director and varsity head coach in implementing the philosophy and direction of the sport.
  • Enforces discipline and sportsmanlike behavior at all times, and establishes and oversees penalties for breach of such standards by individual students.
  • Maintains, monitors, and reacts to daily attendance reports and participant emergency medical cards as necessary.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in the areas of physical and emotional health and safety.
  • Maintains competency in understanding and enforcing WIAA, Big 8 Conference and School Board rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Enforces WIAA and district policies regarding eligibility criteria in interscholastic competition in the sport and monitors it through district software.
  • Adheres to a highly efficient and technically sound program of injury prevention and follow up.
  • Works closely with the high school athletics and activities director and varsity head coach in interscholastic contests.
  • Recommends purchase of equipment, supplies, and uniforms to head varsity coach.
  • Responsible for all equipment.
  • Develops a consistent and positive public communications procedure through the school and media to inform the parents and the general public about the athletic program.
  • Acts as a liaison with the booster clubs.
  • Keeps other coaches informed of rules and other relevant changes within the particular sport.
  • Uses generally accepted practices and discretion in determining the proper course of action while using good decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrates emotional maturity.
  • Represents the district in professional manner.
  • Other duties may be assigned by the athletic department.
  • Plans, communicates, and executes with cooperation of the head varsity coach a pre-season meeting for prospective student-athletes and their parents to communicate team schedule, policies and procedures.
  • Develops and distributes a team handbook in cooperation with the varsity head coach by the first team meeting to include at least the following: practice schedule, team rules and policies, coaching philosophy statement, special dates and events, game schedule, team tryout process and criteria, lettering policy, how parents/students should communicate with head coach, and how players earn playing time.
  • Attends and participates in Athletic Department sponsored athletic code meetings.
  • Attends annual clinics or workshops that aim to enhance knowledge of the specific sport or other area as assigned by administration.
  • Selects and defines responsibilities of student managers.
  • Determines and communicates responsibilities of assistant coaches.
  • Provides inservices for assistant and sub-varsity coaches via staff meetings, program goals, duties definition and expectations, etc.
  • Recommends assistant or volunteer coaches to the High School Athletics and Activities Director.
  • Takes the initiative to communicate activity on a regular basis to the High School Athletics and Activities Director.
  • Plans and executes a regular program of practice in season.
  • Develops and completes practice plans for each practice session.
  • Provides documentation for each practice session upon request of administration.
  • Establishes a team philosophy and system that is complementary and/or supportive to that of the entire program.
  • Maintains accurate statistics, records, and results of the season.
  • Collects, inventories, and arranges to clean and repair all equipment.
  • Provides inventory documentation upon request of administration.
  • Supervises students of particular program.
