About The Position

Shield AI is seeking an HMS Simulation Framework Lead to lead a team of simulation framework engineers responsible for building, extending, and maintaining modeling and simulation interface layers between core autonomy and simulation backends, including NGTS, AFSIM, Aechelon, HMSSimBlocks, and HMSF. The team provides frameworks, plugins, interfaces, and technical troubleshooting to support program-level software integration teams. The role sets the strategic simulation roadmap for Hivemind Solutions. It supports programs currently relying on HMSSimBlocks while partnering with Hivemind Platform (HMP) during the transition to the Hivemind Simulation Framework (HMSF). The lead will advocate for HMS program requirements, influence HMSF product roadmap features, and establish a phased migration path across HMS portfolios while maintaining operational support for active programs.

Requirements

  • Typically a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline and 7+ years of related experience; alternatively, 5+ years with a master's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience in technical leadership, team leadership, or engineering management.
  • Deep software engineering background in C++ and Python within Linux environments.
  • Practical experience with modeling and simulation frameworks such as AFSIM, NGTS, SimBlocks/HMSF, or similar.
  • Experience with distributed simulation middleware such as DDS or DIS/HLA.
  • Ability to partner with platform or product teams to influence external product roadmaps and drive program requirements upstream.
  • Experience managing software platform migrations while maintaining operational stability for legacy systems.
  • Familiarity with defense simulation interface standards such as GRID/JSE, CIGI, and CSF, and network protocols such as UDP/TCP.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an active U.S. SECRET security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of specialized C++ and Python simulation engineers; set technical direction, conduct performance reviews, and foster high engineering rigor.
  • Collaborate with HMP engineering and product leadership to incorporate HMS program requirements into HMSF, including needs involving complex DoD programs, custom sensors, and multi-domain environments.
  • Develop a phased migration roadmap from HMSSimBlocks to HMSF, maintaining operational support for active HMSSimBlocks programs while guiding adoption of HMSF.
  • Oversee the design and maintenance of baseline simulation adapters, plugins, and interfaces for NGTS, AFSIM, Aechelon, HMSSimBlocks, and HMSF.
  • Align simulation frameworks with defense interface standards such as GRID/JSE, CIGI, CSF, and DDS to enable interoperability across DoD-recognized threat and visual simulators.
  • Partner with HMS program leads, integration teams, and autonomy teams to support simulation environments for hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) testing.
  • Provide standardized simulation templates, documentation, and framework support to downstream engineering teams.
