About The Position

The Department of Pathology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, is seeking a full-time academic Staff Pathologist to serve as the HLA Director of the Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Laboratory. This role offers a clinically advanced and supportive academic environment, with opportunities to be part of a landmark collaboration involving Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI), BIDMC, and Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians (HMFP) to establish New England’s only freestanding adult inpatient cancer hospital. The successful candidate will help oversee a comprehensive, rapidly growing, state-of-the-art laboratory supporting various clinical programs, including transplantation and transfusion support. The position also involves clinical and administrative service responsibilities, active participation in pathology training programs, and the development of translational and/or clinical research. The candidate will be appointed to the faculty of Harvard Medical School at an academic rank commensurate with experience.

Requirements

MD from an accredited medical school OR PhD from an accredited school.
Board-certified in Anatomic/Clinical Pathology or Clinical Pathology (for MD).
Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Fellowship or Equivalent Training (for MD).
A valid MA medical license or the ability to obtain one (for MD).
Doctoral training and relevant post-doctoral experience in histocompatibility and immunogenetics (for PhD).
Board certification or eligibility by the American College of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ACHI), or equivalent (for PhD).
Credentialing as an HLA Laboratory Director through the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI), or equivalent.
Demonstrated experience in clinical histocompatibility and immunogenetics testing, including: High-resolution HLA typing, HLA antibody screening and identification, Engraftment (chimerism) monitoring, Physical and virtual crossmatch testing and interpretation.

Nice To Haves

Recent fellowship graduates and mid- and senior histocompatibility directors (PhD, MD, MD/PhD) are strongly encouraged to apply.
Expertise in next-generation sequencing (NGS) and laboratory informatics is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

Oversee a comprehensive, rapidly growing, state-of-the-art histocompatibility and immunogenetics laboratory.
Support clinical programs in solid organ transplantation, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, transfusion support, and HLA disease association testing.
Share clinical and administrative service responsibilities.
Play an active role in pathology training programs.
Develop a strong program in translational and/or clinical research.
Collaboratively lead in a complex laboratory team-oriented environment.
