About The Position

Under the supervision of the HIV Counseling and Treatment Coordinator, this role is responsible for HIV Counseling and obtaining specimens from persons requesting HIV testing. The position requires working at various locations, including Henry J. Austin Health Center and sites with Memorandums of Understanding with Henry J. Austin Health Center. Work hours and days may vary.

Requirements

  • High school diploma.
  • Two (2) years of counseling experience.
  • Must successfully complete the NJSDH HIV Counselor Training Program.
  • Must obtain and maintain proficiency certification for performing Rapid HIV testing.
  • Must successfully complete and be able to perform as a phlebotomist.
  • Computer literacy and proficiency.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work well with others and assist the public cooperatively and courteously.
  • Ability to maintain client confidentiality.
  • Ability to maintain positive emotions in highly challenging situations.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate phones, computers, and other office equipment.
  • Physical ability to kneel, bend, and perform light lifting.
  • Ability to write and speak clearly in English.
  • Ability to hear at normal speaking levels.
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Patient screening and collection of demographic history.
  • Providing pre-test counseling regarding the test and its significance.
  • Providing post-test counseling and scheduling follow-up appointments.
  • Maintaining accurate and confidential records and logs.
  • Completing daily testing logs.
  • Making referrals to social service agencies and tracking Case Management referrals.
  • Completing monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
  • Utilizing electronic and/or manual recording and information systems.
  • Serving as a member of the health care team.
  • Distributing appropriate educational literature.
  • Maintaining strict confidentiality of patient records and charts.
  • Preparing reports for HJA management staff and public agencies.
  • Greeting patients/clients/customers in a personal and professional manner.
  • Distributing condoms.
  • Performing other duties and assuming other responsibilities as assigned by the HIV Counseling and Treatment Coordinator.
