About The Position

We're seeking a certified Histotechnologist II who will support Emory Healthcare’s mission of clinical care, education, and research by demonstrating the core values of excellence, caring, and integrity. This role performs routine or complex histologic procedures to assist physicians in diagnosis and treatment while upholding the values of the organization. This includes providing and demonstrating exemplary customer service skills throughout the preanalytical, analytical and post analytical processes. The position involves accessioning tissue specimens, preparing specimens for fixation, embedding and sectioning specimens, affixing tissue to slides, staining, cover slipping, and labeling slides. It also includes maintaining a reference system for control blocks and slides, preparing fixative and staining solutions, and potentially performing frozen section microtomy. The Histotechnologist will operate precision laboratory instruments, perform preventive maintenance, troubleshoot equipment issues, and assist in minor repairs or calibrations. They will also assist in the formulation and revision of departmental policies and procedures, monitor and maintain inventories of supplies and chemicals, and participate in quality control activities. Safety precautions are to be followed when working with specimens and equipment. The role may involve keeping productivity records and documenting procedures. Additionally, the Histotechnologist will assist in developing, implementing, and revising histologic policies and procedures, and evaluate the reliability of current methodologies, recommending changes to improve practices. Professional development is encouraged through a plan formulated with the manager, attending educational in-services, and participating in professional activities to stay current with trends and developments. Other related duties may be required.

Requirements

  • High School diploma.
  • Certification as HT(ASCP) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, with a minimum of two (2) years' experience, or certification as HTL(ASCP) or HTL-by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists with no experience.
  • Certification must be obtained within 18 months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine or complex histologic procedures to assist physicians in diagnosis and treatment.

  • May accession tissue specimens.
  • Prepares routine specimens for fixation in automatic processors.
  • Embeds and sections specimens using a microtome.
  • Affixes tissue to slides, stains, cover slips, and labels slides.
  • Maintains a reference system of control blocks and slides for use in special studies.
  • Prepares fixative and staining solutions according to established laboratory procedures.
  • May perform frozen section microtomy.
  • Operates precision laboratory instruments and scientific equipment.
  • Performs preventive maintenance according to established procedures and schedules.
  • Troubleshoots equipment issues, performs minor repairs, adjustments, or calibrations according to equipment service literature.
  • Assists in the formulation and revision of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Assists with monitoring and maintaining inventories of laboratory supplies and chemicals.
  • Performs and participates in the review and reporting of quality control activities in the laboratory.
  • Takes required precautions to comply with CAP, organizational and other safety standards when working with specimens and laboratory equipment.
  • May keep productivity records and document specific procedures to support laboratory activities.
  • Assists in developing, implementing and revising histologic policies and procedures.
  • Evaluates reliability of current methodologies; recommends changes to improve current practices.
  • Works with manager to formulate plan for professional development.
  • Attends educational in-services as appropriate.
  • Participates in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
