About The Position

The Histotechnologist prepares slides from surgical and autopsy materials for examination by a pathologist and diagnosis. The role requires meeting daily slide-distribution deadlines, working without constant supervision, technical ability, and a strong sense of responsibility toward patients. Requirements

Successfully completed a NAACLS-accredited Histotechnician program within the last five years; this requirement is waived for individuals with current HT(ASCP) certification.
Clear written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

One to two years of experience as a Histotechnician.
American Society of Clinical Pathologists HT(ASCP) certification.

Responsibilities

Follow all laboratory and hospital safety policies.
Operate department equipment safely and according to manufacturer guidelines; perform preventive maintenance, troubleshoot instrument failures as able, and alert appropriate personnel to equipment problems.
Follow department quality-control procedures, troubleshoot failures, and document them appropriately.
Participate in interdepartmental and intradepartmental quality-assurance initiatives.
Respond to department staffing needs by covering extra shifts when necessary.
Maintain technical competency and seek clarification when necessary.
Use necessary laboratory information functions effectively.
Assist the supervisor in maintaining adequate inventories of reagents and testing supplies.
Meet performance expectations for customer service, teamwork, resource utilization, and staff and self-development.
Perform other duties as assigned or directed to support smooth department or unit operations.
Check identification and prepare surgical specimens for gross examination by a pathologist.
Load surgical specimens in the Autotechnicon and set or check time settings.
Short-accession surgical specimens for frozen sections and other urgent procedures.
Maintain positive specimen identification throughout processing.
Cut embedded surgical specimens using a rotary microtome.
Deparaffinize cut sections and perform H&E staining.
Perform various special stains.
Examine specimens to ensure they meet established standards.
Coordinate slides and pathology reports and deliver them to the pathologist for diagnosis.
Prepare and maintain reagents, solutions, and stains according to standard formulas.
