About The Position

Responsible for preparing frozen sections, preparing fixed tissue specimens, and cutting, mounting, and staining tissue sections for microscopic examination by a pathologist. Performs frozen section preparations within expected time while ensuring tissue is embedded properly, cut accurately, and stained correctly so that diagnosis to clinician can be made promptly. Performs routine, special stains, and immune histochemical stains. Recognizes deviations from expected results and uses judgment in determining appropriate actions. Assists with autopsies according to standard procedures as assigned. Prepares and organizes tissue specimens and assists in gross examination. Prepares specimens to be sent to other laboratories for testing ensuring order accuracy and correct lab is chosen for testing. Stores or disposes of prepared specimens, slides, and blocks in a neat retrievable manner. Completes required daily procedures with accuracy. Responsible for operating and maintaining routine histology equipment, including processors, embedding centers, H&E stainers, microtomes, and cryostats.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a HT or HTL (ASCP) program and must obtain certification within one year of completing program or 1 year from hire date; or a certified HT or HTL (ASCP) and 1 year of experience is required or an uncertified HT with 3 at least years of experience is required.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development and demonstrates the skills and competency appropriate to the ages, culture, developmental stages, and special needs of the patient population served.
  • Will limit access to protected health information (PHI) to the information reasonably necessary to do the job.
  • Will share information only on a need-to-know basis for work purposes.
  • Access to verbal, written and electronic PHI for this job has been determined based on job level and job responsibility within the organization.
  • Computerized access to PHI for this job has been determined as described above and is controlled via user ID and password.
