About The Position

The Histotechnologist performs frozen section preparations, routine stains, special stains, and immune histochemical stains. This role requires recognizing deviations from expected results and using judgment to determine appropriate actions. The Histotechnologist will also assist with autopsies, prepare and organize tissue specimens, assist in gross examination, and prepare specimens for other laboratories. Proper storage and disposal of prepared specimens, slides, and blocks are also key responsibilities, ensuring all required daily procedures are completed with accuracy.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a HT or HTL (ASCP) program and must obtain certification within one year of completing program or 1 year from hire date; or a certified HT or HTL (ASCP) and 1 year of experience is required or an uncertified HT with 3 at least years of experience is required.
  • Works in laboratory with exposure to chemicals, pathogens and patient blood and body fluids.
  • Some latex exposure may be expected.
  • Moderate lifting, pulling, pushing, and carrying.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds and on occasion greater than 25 pounds with assistance.
  • Frequent walking, standing, stooping, and reaching.
  • Sitting with use of computer for long periods of time.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development and demonstrates the skills and competency appropriate to the ages, culture, developmental stages, and special needs of the patient population served.
  • Will limit access to protected health information (PHI) to the information reasonably necessary to do the job.
  • Will share information only on a need-to-know basis for work purposes.
  • Access to verbal, written and electronic PHI for this job has been determined based on job level and job responsibility within the organization.
  • Computerized access to PHI for this job has been determined as described above and is controlled via user ID and password.

Responsibilities

  • Performs frozen section preparations within expected time while ensuring tissue is embedded properly, cut accurately, and stained correctly so that diagnosis to clinician can be made promptly.
  • Performs routine, special stains, and immune histochemical stains.
  • Recognizes deviations from expected results and uses judgment in determining appropriate actions.
  • Assists with autopsies according to standard procedures as assigned.
  • Prepares and organizes tissue specimens and assists in gross examination.
  • Prepares specimens to be sent to other laboratories for testing ensuring order accuracy and correct lab is chosen for testing.
  • Stores or disposes of prepared specimens, slides, and blocks in a neat retrievable manner.
  • Completes required daily procedures with accuracy.
