About The Position

This is an advanced histotechnologist role within the Division of Anatomic Pathology, under the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine that supports a unique, multi-phase scope of work spanning research and clinical practice. This histotechnologist is a professional who thrives in evolving environments, demonstrates strong judgment, and is highly motivated to translate innovation into high-quality patient care. In the first year, under the direction of the Division Chief and Frontiers Program co-investigators as well as the Histology Supervisor, this individual will develop and optimize novel tests not currently available in the histology laboratory, while building familiarity with clinical workflows, quality systems, and regulatory requirements. In years two and three, the role will transition to clinical implementation, including test validation, documentation, and integration into routine workflows in compliance with CAP and CLIA standards. This histotechnologist will also train other histotechnologists and serve as a key resource bridging research and clinical operations. After year three, this role will be fully assimilated into the histology laboratory.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree Required
  • Histotechnician (HT) - American Society for Clinical Pathology - upon hire - Required or Histotechnologist (HTL) - American Society for Clinical Pathology - upon hire - Required
  • At least three (3) years experience that required the need to perform Immunohistochemistry stains and troubleshooting. Required
  • Exhibits the ability to work with computer programs and computer controlled equipment
  • Exhibits the ability to handle and interpret data, multitask, and maintains confidential material
  • Exhibits good laboratory technique and safety practices
  • Exhibits good communication, technical and organizational skills

  • Bachelor's Degree Healthcare field of study or Histotechnology Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Accurately performs routine to moderately complex histologic tests or procedures as assigned and reports results through appropriate channels.
  • Completes, evaluates and records all appropriate quality controls and quality assurance markers.
  • Activates troubleshooting procedures when necessary.
  • Trains others to perform this responsibility when assigned.
  • Performs preventative/safety maintenance on equipment and maintains a safe, clean and efficient work environment.
  • Takes initiative in problem solving equipment failures to the extent capable.
  • Communicates unresolved issues to supervisor or designee.
  • Complies with personal protective equipment (PPE) and other laboratory and hospital safety standards 100% of the time.
  • Notifies supervisor of unsafe events.
  • Responsibly controls and maintains inventory.
  • Trains others to perform this responsibility when assigned.
  • Provides professional, courteous and calm customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • Identifies appropriate resources and sources for re-directed inquiries.
  • Acts as a reference source for laboratory procedures within their skill inventory as necessary.
  • Regularly reviews operational procedure manuals.
  • Maintains individual annual technical competency assessments.
  • Actively identifies and pursues learning needs.
  • Actively participates in departmental and continuing education meetings.
  • Successfully completes 12 units of approved continuing education activities during evaluation cycle.
  • Performs all functions of a Histotechnologist to include embedding, cutting staining, special staining, and variety of solution preparation, able to perform frozen sections and prep and stain cytology samples.
  • Also able to run all machinery in histology to include trouble shooting and maintenance.
  • Trains others to perform this responsibility when assigned.
  • Performs Immunohistochemistry staining within the Immunohistochemistry section of the laboratory using the BOND stainer.
  • Troubleshoots issues with immunohistochemical and cytochemical stains when necessary.
