About The Position

The Pathology Laboratory Assistant is responsible for preparing the autopsy room for procedures and assists with the autopsy procedure to facilitate the performance for the pathologist and residents. Schedule: Monday through Friday; Dayshift Opening Summer 2026 at 4000 Lakeland Highlands Road, Lakeland, FL. Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree is required. An associates degree and two (2) years of directly related Histotechnology experience (in addition to the requirements listed in the Experience section) may substitute for the bachelor’s degree.
  • Graduate from an approved school of Histotechnology is required.
  • Maintains a current Florida license as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist (Qualification: Histology Technologist).
  • Certified as a Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL), or eligible for either certification through a professional laboratory agency such as the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
  • One (1) year of laboratory experience is required.
  • Department-specific competencies may be required based on the area of assignment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs related special staining techniques, which may include immunohistochemical, immunoflourescent and enzymehistochemical stains.
  • Operates computerized equipment for processing and staining of specimens.
  • Uses laboratory computer system to add, cancel and verify completed orders.
  • Performs and documents quality control and preventive maintenance procedures.
  • Performs trouble-shooting of instruments, processing and staining processes,
  • Places engineering and biomed service requests as needed.
  • Prepares stock and working reagents and maintains an adequate supply.
  • Performs specimen receiving and processing and answers the telephone and greets guests to the department.
  • Regularly reports all unacceptable quality control and instrument failures to a senior technologist, pathology coordinator, manager and/or Pathologist and documents discrepancies and their resolutions.
  • Assumes one or more of the following responsibilities: outside facility frozen section room maintenance, projects, teaching, tech in charge, reagent validations and evaluation of new technology.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for maintaining an active role in the laboratory quality improvement program including performance and evaluation of key quality indicators.
  • Follows the established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agencies requirements.
  • Practices infection control and safety policies.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient record, hospital and departmental matters at all times
