About The Position

Labcorp is seeking a Histotechnician to join its team at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. The role processes human tissue and body fluid specimens for microscopic examination and performs technical work involved in producing histopathological slides of surgical specimens. Duties include embedding and sectioning tissue, performing immunohistochemical tests and staining procedures, preparing reagents, operating and maintaining laboratory instruments, documenting maintenance and quality-control activities, and reporting accurate and timely results to support quality patient care. The position follows laboratory policies and procedures for specimen processing, analysis, and reporting, and requires documenting and addressing problems that may affect test performance. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 5:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The role is based at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, MA. The stated pay range is $31.35–$44.16 per hour. Candidates should be comfortable embedding both large and small specimens, able to work independently and as part of a team, and capable of meeting the position’s physical requirements. Overtime or other shifts may be needed depending on business needs.

Requirements

Associate’s degree in Histology, or a high school diploma or equivalent with at least 1 year of histology experience.
Ability to handle the physical requirements of the position.
Ability to pass a standardized color blindness test.
Flexibility to work overtime or other shifts depending on business needs.

Nice To Haves

At least 3 months of histology experience.
At least 3 months of immunohistochemistry experience.
Histology and/or ASCP certifications.
Comfort embedding both large and small specimens.
Understanding of laboratory operations, policies, and procedures.
Experience working in a high-volume laboratory environment.
Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
Computer proficiency and familiarity with laboratory information systems.
Strong attention to detail, communication, and organizational skills.
Non-traditional degrees with applicable science credits that meet CLIA standards may meet the education requirements in lieu of the listed education requirements.

Responsibilities

Process human tissue and body fluid specimens in preparation for microscopic examination.
Perform technical duties related to producing histopathological slides of surgical specimens.
Section embedded tissue using a microtome and properly mount sections on microscope slides.
Perform immunohistochemical tests on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections.
Process mounted sections through routine and special staining procedures.
Orient and embed surgical tissue specimens.
Prepare stains and reagents needed for special procedures.
Report accurate and timely test results.
Operate and maintain manual and automated instruments.
Perform and document equipment maintenance as needed.
Record equipment log data accurately and promptly.
Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality-control procedures.
Adhere to laboratory quality-control policies.
Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, analysis, and reporting.
Document problems that may affect test performance and perform corrective actions as needed.
