About The Position

The Histotechnician performs specialized histologic preparation of frozen and fixed tissue specimens during Mohs micrographic surgery. Working under time-sensitive conditions, they process, section, stain, and prepare slides for immediate microscopic evaluation by the Mohs surgeon. They ensure optimal quality, accurate labeling, documentation, and maintain laboratory standards for patient care.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree (or equivalent) in histotechnology, medical laboratory science, biology, or related field required.
  • Proficiency with frozen sectioning, embedding, microtomy, staining techniques, and rapid turnaround workflows.
  • Strong manual dexterity, attention to detail, and ability to work under time pressure.
  • Ability to interpret tissue under microscope, identify epidermis/dermis, margins, etc.
  • Good problem-solving skills; ability to troubleshoot technical or equipment issues.
  • Effective communication and collaboration with surgical, clinical, and pathology teams.
  • Organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks concurrently.
  • Knowledge of lab safety, quality control, equipment maintenance, and documentation practices.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, perform fine manipulations, and work in lab environment (chemical exposure, cold temps, etc.).
  • Flexibility and reliability—willingness to be responsive to intraoperative demands and occasional overtime or shift adjustments.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in a histology laboratory preferred
  • Prior Mohs lab experience preferred.
  • Certification as Histotechnician (HT) preferred or Histotechnologist (HTL) by ASCP or equivalent preferred.
