About The Position

This position is responsible for collecting and preparing specimens for testing procedures. The Histotechnician will prepare, embed, cut, and stain microscopic slides from surgery and autopsy specimens for examinations under the supervision of a Senior Technologist. The role also involves performing and evaluating other histological procedures, preparing microscope slides, and maintaining adequate specimen records. Additionally, the position requires the preparation and evaluation of routine and special stains, filing of slides and paraffin blocks, and preparation of slides for immunoperoxidase stains. The Histotechnician will also assist in renal biopsy procedures, record blocks, slides, and stains, and maintain the work area and organize work effectively. Interdepartmental communication and productivity are key aspects of this role. The position also involves processing frozen sections from surgical and autopsy material, preparing, cutting, and staining frozen sections, and assisting the Pathologist in gross pathology examination of surgical specimens, including specimen collection as needed. Participation in QA activities, appropriate continuing education programs, and supply management of the section are also required. The Histotechnician will support and maintain a positive work environment, follow all hospital and department policies, maintain confidentiality, utilize proper safety equipment, and maintain equipment, with knowledge of the LIS system. Assistance in the operation and maintenance of equipment and instrument operation and maintenance is also expected.

Requirements

  • Certification as Histologic Technician by ASCP Board or eligible. Must obtain within six months from date of hire.
  • Must be a High School or GED Diploma Graduate.
  • Must have successfully completed an approved program in histological technique or equivalent.
  • Must be able to work under intense mental concentration or stress and utilize good judgment when making decisions.
  • Job duties are such that quality of patient care is directly dependent upon correct performance.
  • Must be able to accept other than routine scheduled shifts as departmental need requires.
  • Must be able to use visual acuity to see monitor screen, computer and hard copy materials.
  • Must be able to hear and verbally communicate in person and over the phone or radio.
  • Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time (up to 2 hours).
  • Must be able to comprehend and learn operation of various office equipment.
  • Must have functional range of motion of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spines, upper and lower extremities with a grip strength of 50-60# specific to job evaluation.
  • Must be able to forward reach, overhead reach, bend, squat, kneel and apply proper body mechanics during the transfers and transport supplies and/or equipment using proper body mechanics.
  • Must be able to lift up to 10# specific to job evaluation.
