About The Position

UTHealth Houston is seeking a Histotechnician III with Mohs training to perform specialized histology laboratory procedures. This role involves tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, staining, and slide preparation to support accurate pathology diagnoses. The Histotechnician III will provide technical expertise and troubleshooting guidance, maintain laboratory equipment and quality control standards, ensure compliance with SOPs, and assist with laboratory operations, record maintenance, and continuous improvement initiatives. This position is PRN and needed to cover one day a week.

Requirements

  • Certified Histotechnician (HT(ASCP)) by American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) required
  • Associate's Degree required
  • 5 years of experience as a Histotechnician required
  • Mohs trained
  • Residency Requirement: Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.

Responsibilities

  • Performs tissue processing, embedding in paraffin, and cutting, sectioning, staining, and mounting on slides for interpretation by a pathologist.
  • Provides technical guidance, and advice, to the Histology staff on procedures and troubleshooting.
  • Adapts existing protocols to optimize results.
  • Sets up equipment, instruments and apparatus for specific laboratory procedures for routine to advanced and specialized histology techniques.
  • Maintains quality control and determines suitability of results/materials for release to requesting individuals.
  • Performs slide preparation according to SOP guidelines.
  • Maintains laboratory in a clean, functional state, as well as cleaning or performing scheduled equipment and instrument maintenance / calibration / certifications, as required.
  • Assists with quality control standards in the laboratory.
  • Helps maintain blocks and/or slides files.
  • Complies with all departmental SOPs and adheres to all rules and protocols.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
