About The Position

The Histotechnician/Histotechnologist performs laboratory tissue testing according to established procedures and protocols. The Histotechnician/Histotechnologist receives, processes, and prepares tissue samples for diagnosis using such procedures as embedding, microtomy, staining, cover-slipping, Immunohistochemistry and special stains. The Histotechnician/Histotechnologist may also specialize in a given laboratory discipline(s), and works effectively as a team member within the department and with other departments to provide quality service through communication, cooperation, and collaboration.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in related life science or applied science field OR HEW/HHS or HT(ASCP) certification with laboratory experience in lieu of a degree
  • HT (ASCP) or equivalent preferred.

  • 1-2 years’ previous experience preferred; student training accepted.

Responsibilities

  • Performs histological procedures including embedding, cutting, and staining surgical, biopsy and anatomical tissues for light and fluorescent microscopic slide review.
  • Recognizes deviation from expected results and analyzes and corrects problems within established periods to expedite diagnosis.
  • Maintains reagents and equipment in proper quantities and condition.
  • Records instrument maintenance troubleshoots where necessary to insure accurate generation of test results.
  • Uses computer equipment to receive and validate laboratory orders to record and transmit test data efficiently.
  • Analyzes and records QC data with appropriate follow-up.
  • May implement corrective action after consultation with supervisory personnel to verify accuracy and precision of instruments and staining quality.
  • Communicates with clinical staff about specimen submission requirements to answer inquiries about test results and methodology to keep medical staff knowledgeable of laboratory functions.
  • Participates in orientation and training of new employees and students, hospital and laboratory in-service and continuing education programs and mandated annual proficiency testing to ensure currency of job knowledge and technical competency.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by lead, supervisor, or manager.
