About The Position

The History Teacher will provide instructional services to scholars within the Youth Services Center (YSC), which is the District of Columbia’s secure detention center for male and female youth. This role involves supporting scholars taking multiple courses, including accelerated offerings, across content areas such as Civics, World History I, World History II, US History, US Government, and DC History & Government. The position requires flexibility and adaptability in planning and delivering instructional strategies to meet the diverse needs of scholars.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related subject field
  • Must have or be eligible for initial certification by OSSE in the appropriate content area (must obtain initial certification within 1 year of employment)

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate multi-grade, multi-content coursework for groups of multi-aged scholars in each classroom or on their units.
  • Ensure timely delivery and grading of lessons.
  • Adapt lessons to accommodate varied learning styles, abilities, and academic levels of scholars.
  • Maintain a positive, structured learning environment for all scholars.
  • Use restorative practices to support the academic and behavioral growth of scholars.
  • Work closely with colleagues, leadership, and facility staff to ensure delivery of a well-rounded educational program.
  • Participate in team meetings to discuss scholar progress, share strategies, and address academic and/or behavioral concerns.
  • Communicate regularly with staff about scholar needs and achievements.
  • Ensure high-quality instructional materials comply with organization, facility, district, and federal education regulations.
  • Prepare reports (lesson plans, assessments, progress reports, gradebook, etc.) on time and in accordance with organizational guidelines.
  • Perform tasks that may not directly align with your job description but are vital and serve to maintain a safe and effective teaching and learning environment for scholars and staff.
