About The Position

Newport News Behavioral Health Center is a 108-bed intensive and highly structured residential treatment facility for the psychiatric and behavioral health needs of adolescent males and females ages 11-18 years. The center has an on-site certified school, therapists, and vocational programming. This position is responsible for planning and providing instruction to students assigned to classrooms. The teacher participates in departmental meetings, completes paperwork pertaining to assessment, individualized education plans, monitoring student progress, reporting student progress, and transition planning as related to each student’s educational needs. This role provides education case management for students assigned to classrooms and must maintain ongoing communication with facility staff, families, and each student’s agency stakeholder.

Requirements

  • Must hold a valid Virginia Teaching License in Special Education — General Curriculum K-12 or the content area of History and Social Sciences (Grades K-12).
  • Teachers must be Virginia DOE certified or license eligible.
  • May have a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and be actively enrolled in a teacher licensure or Master’s program for History and Social Sciences Education or Special Education.
  • May have already taught between one and two years on a provisional Virginia Teaching License in History and Social Sciences (Grades K-12) or Special Education — General Curriculum K-12.
  • Be able to demonstrate their path to coursework completion for license eligibility prior to expiration of a 5-year provisional teaching license.
  • Must have a good working knowledge of Virginia Special Education regulations and behavior management techniques.

Nice To Haves

  • Dual endorsement in the content area is preferred of SPED certified applicants but is not required.
  • Previous classroom experience in a mental health setting and/or with children who have emotional and behavioral disorders is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Administers and interprets informal educational assessments within 5 days of admission to plan each student’s educational program.
  • Reviews records and information received from the student’s home school to plan the educational program.
  • Contacts parents/guardians and home school system to get further input on student’s educational needs.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of IEPs for students identified for Special Education services.
  • Participates with parents and local education agency representatives in IEP meetings; maintains required documentation of assigned caseload in student files.
  • Provides individualized instruction for all students assigned to the classroom and provides necessary accommodations as prescribed by the IEP as evidenced by lesson plans submitted to the lead teacher as required or requested.
  • Maintains working knowledge and active practice of evolving educational and behavioral strategies for working with students in a mental health setting.
  • Writes monthly academic and behavioral progress notes for each student.
  • Evaluates student work and completes report cards, including student goal progress reports according to the school calendar, for distribution to the appropriate parties.
