About The Position

Phillips Exeter Academy is seeking a History Instructor to teach all levels of History, including courses on Asian Economic History, Asian History, Economic History, and U.S. History. The role involves instructing students through lectures, demonstrations, and discussions, often around a Harkness table. Teachers are expected to be dedicated to daily preparation, establish clear learning objectives, prepare and grade assignments, and adapt teaching methods to meet diverse student needs. The position also requires maintaining student records, observing and evaluating student performance, and enforcing school policies. A commitment to diversity and inclusivity is essential. Additionally, the instructor will advise student clubs, serve on committees, reside in campus housing, and play a critical role in cultivating the school's community-centered student dormitory life, including regular dormitory duty. The instructor will also serve as a mentor to student advisees and act as a liaison between advisees' families and the Academy.

Requirements

• Master’s or equivalent degree in History, or related field.
• 20 months (two academic years) of part-time or full-time teaching experience as a Teacher, Teaching Assistant, or Instructor at secondary level or post-secondary level.
• Experience must include teaching Asian Economic History. Will accept coursework in this area at the level of Master’s thesis or higher in lieu of experience teaching Asian Economic History classes.
• Criminal and driving background checks required.

Responsibilities

• Teach all levels of History (four classes per trimester), including courses on Asian Economic History, Asian History, Economic History, and U.S. History.
• Instruct through lectures, demonstrations, and discussions, often around a Harkness table.
• Be dedicated to daily preparation for classes.
• Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units and projects and communicate those objectives to students.
• Prepare, administer and grade tests and assignments.
• Prepare materials and classrooms for all class activities.
• Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students’ varying needs and interests.
• Maintain accurate and complete student records.
• Observe and evaluate students’ performance, behavior, social development and physical health.
• Enforce all administration policies and rules governing students.
• Demonstrate commitment to diversity and inclusivity and to serving the needs of a diverse and inclusive community with diplomacy and tact.
• Advise student clubs and organizations, and serve on committees as needed.
• Reside in campus housing and play a critical role in cultivating Exeter’s community-centered student dormitory life, with regular dormitory duty per week.
• Serve as mentor to student advisees throughout the student’s time at Exeter, and serve as the main liaison between the advisee’s family/guardian and Exeter.
