About The Position

American Conservation Experience (ACE), in partnership with Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, is seeking one member to contribute to historic preservation projects alongside Glen Canyon National Recreation Area staff. The intern will work with and assist the historic preservation team at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in the documentation and preservation of historic structures and cultural resources primarily at the Lees Ferry District, with potential to work in other areas of the park. The intern will take a leadership role to plan and assist to implement historic preservation projects utilizing youth corps completing basic preservation projects. Project work will focus on preservation activities on structures within a historic landscape, including preservation of wood log structures and masonry buildings. Specific tasks may include applying wood log preservatives, painting, assisting with basic and technical carpentry work of structure windows, doors, and framing; mixing and applying mortars; masonry repointing and stone resetting. Work may also include research, field data collection, and the preparation of historic structure documentation to support reports and other preservation planning efforts. After initial orientation and training under NPS staff, the intern will sometimes work independently on historic preservation tasks and provide assistance in the training and technical oversight of youth corps. This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.

Requirements

• Members must be authorized to work in the United States.
• Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
• Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
• A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record.
• Members must be 21+ to drive due to ACE's insurance and liability requirements.
• Willing to undergo and must pass the required criminal history checks.
• Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
• ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.
• Knowledge and ability to use various hand and power tools.
• Knowledge of basic masonry and/or carpentry techniques.
• Ability and/or willingness to learn to camp in developed campsites.
• Deep interest in historic preservation, and familiar with the Secretary of the Interior standards for historic preservation.

Nice To Haves

• Experience working independently using one or more historic preservation technical skills in masonry or carpentry such as repointing historic mortars, resetting loose stones, applying wood preservatives, completing wood log repairs, or similar tasks.
• Experience evaluating historic structures to identify preservation needs and in planning basic historic preservation projects to address those needs.
• Experience documenting historic preservation tasks.
• Ability to assist with leading or directing the work of others.

Benefits

• Living allowance of $1000/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.
• Public Land Corps Hiring Authority upon completion of term of service and 640 hours of service.
• Potential for provided government housing at around $650/mo (single room in a shared house, or a room in a bunk house; housing does not include Wi-Fi).
• $42 backcountry per diem for overnight camping, not to exceed 12 nights.
• Up to $300 for eligible gear purchases.
