About The Position

This role involves processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining histopathology specimens to provide high-quality materials for diagnosis. The technologist will operate and maintain various laboratory equipment, perform microtomy and cryotomy, and prepare specimens for routine histology, special stains, immunohistochemistry, and genetic studies. The position requires a thorough understanding of tissue processing techniques, fixation, dehydration, and infiltration. Responsibilities also include performing decalcification, special processing and staining of various tissue types, and executing a wide range of immunohistochemistry procedures. Accurate record-keeping, filing of blocks and slides, and repair of slides are also key duties.

Requirements

  • Minimum five (5) years’ work experience in a histology laboratory
  • Current certification for HT through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent
  • Knowledge of the procedures used for the optimal sectioning of all tissue types.
  • Knowledge of tissue morphology to identify tissue type and to identify correct embedding, sectioning, and staining reactions.
  • Knowledge of basic teaching techniques to instruct and train other technicians and assist residents in training.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of all specialized and general laboratory equipment used in the laboratory.
  • Basic knowledge of computers.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out all processing, embedding, sectioning and staining procedures related to histopathology specimen handling.
  • Operate and maintain processors, embedding stations, automated strainers, microtome, cryostats, and other equipment used to prepare patient specimens.
  • Perform microtomy/cryotomy at a skill level sufficient to cut sections of high quality.
  • Set up technical procedures and other details necessary for processing frozen and paraffin sections or touch preparations.
  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the theory of fixation, dehydration, and infiltration of tissue samples.
  • Perform all aspects of microtomy and slide preparation for routine histology, special stains, immunohistochemistry, and collection for genetic studies.
  • Perform tissue orientation and embedding in paraffin wax and proper microtomy techniques of all tissue types including bone.
  • Perform decalcification of all types of bone using various acids and acid/fixative combinations.
  • Perform special processing and staining of all tissue types including skin, bone, nerve, brain, and lymph nodes, etc., human and animal tissue.
  • Perform special stains demonstrating microorganisms, anatomical characteristics, carbohydrates and amyloidal, pigments, minerals and cytoplasmic granules and enzyme histochemistry manually and by automation.
  • Perform immunohistochemistry procedures, including understanding automated strainers, control selection, quality control review, equipment preventative maintenance, chemical and antibody inventory management, and solution preparation.
  • Keep accurate records of work output for collation of periodic reports, equipment maintenance QC logs and other logs/data.
  • File tissue blocks and slides.
  • Repair broken and damaged slides.
