About The Position

The Dallas VA Medical Center provides primary care and specialty health services, including cardiology, mental health services, treatment for spinal cord injuries, suicide prevention, women's health care, and more. The VA North Texas Health Care System is a progressive provider in the heart of Texas. Poised as the VA's second-largest health care system, we serve over 113,000 Veterans and deliver ¼ million outpatient episodes of care each year to Veterans in 38 Texas counties and two counties in southern Oklahoma. The 853-bed system has a Spinal Cord Injury Center, Domiciliary Care Program, and Community Living Center with a dedicated hospice unit.

Requirements

• A baccalaureate degree and successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnolgist program.
• Certification by ASCP as a Histotechnologist (HTL)
• Certification by ASCP as a Histopathology Technician (HT).
• Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program.

Responsibilities

• Performs duties within the scope of the Histopathology Tech professional certification.
• Collect adequate and properly labeled specimens.
• Properly determine current clinician orders in the computer, per Laboratory procedures.
• Pulling lab orders out of the computer.
• Process specimens for testing and/or shipment to another laboratory for testing.
• Maintains and ensures cleanliness of adequate stock of supplies and rotates stock as needed to ensure supplies are used according to expiration dates.
• Receives specimens and accompanying request forms for any of the tests that can be performed, and checks each for proper identification.
• Clearly communicate the daily status and problems about the laboratory output to team members and senior management of the service.
• Processes laboratory specimens in accordance with VA, The Joint Commission, and the College of American Pathologists.
