About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Pathologist, a technician prepares surgical, grossing area, pathology specimens, biopsies, and slides for the microscopic study of tissues by the Pathologist. The technician labels slides and enters information into automated systems and operates and gathers pertinent information for reports. The technician performs tasks under strict guidelines and regulations of the Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the State of Kansas Health Department, and other regulatory agencies. Does related work as required. All providers and staff must preserve the integrity and confidentiality of protected health information (PHI). Team members may access patient charts, demographic information, and when necessary financial information in order to provide quality care. A confidentiality agreement must be signed prior to receiving access.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a science program with at least an Associate of Science degree or meets any of the CFR 493.1489 requirements for High Complexity testing
  • Willing to work independently yet closely with others as a team player

Responsibilities

  • Prepares grossing area and specimens for the Pathologist
  • Prepares and performs routine biological staining techniques
  • Cut tissue (Microtomy) and place the tissue on slides
  • Embeds, cuts, and stains tissue for histologic examination
  • Maintains storage of slides in an organized manner
  • Document maintenance and troubleshooting problems and communication with Mohs surgeon and nurses
  • Label and match block to slide
  • IHC
  • Accessioning and writing blocks
  • Enter gross data
  • Write and print slide labels for the next day
  • Dispose of Biohazard and hazardous chemicals
  • Stock supplies
  • File slides
  • Understands how different tissues react at different temperatures
  • Follows slide staining procedures, including cover slipping and chemicals used
  • Recording patient information, including surgical in laboratory log
  • Maintains and operates equipment and instruments
  • Refill and maintain chemicals in stainer
  • Records and files findings as directed
  • Maintains all records, updates, standard operating procedures, etc., as required by regulations
  • Enters information such as demographics, order numbers, etc., into notes and systems
  • Uses computer applications or other automated systems such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail, and database software in performing work assignments
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Pick up and keep countertops disinfected, organized, and clean daily
  • Empty trash—both contaminated and non-contaminated according to OSHA guidelines
  • Sweep floors and keep the work area clean
  • Prepare histopathology slides
  • Pull and file patient charts
