About The Position

Performs standardized histotechnology procedures under supervision by the Histology Section leader and Section Pathologist. This role involves various histology techniques including tissue embedding, cutting, staining, coverslipping, labeling, and case distribution. It also includes processing special histology and/or cytology specimens such as muscle and nerve biopsy preparation, fine needle aspiration, immunohistochemical staining, histochemical stains, and bone marrow processing. The technician will accessions specimens into the computer system, assist the pathologist or pathology assistant in performing gross examination of tissue specimens, and assist the Pathologist and/or Clinician in obtaining bone marrow specimens. Some grossing on select specimens may be performed under supervision. The role may also involve preparing frozen sections and other immediate attention specimens for intraoperative diagnosis. Miscellaneous tasks include routine maintenance, specimen filing, sending reference lab specimens, and preparing reagents or solutions. Additionally, the technician will assist with student teaching and training, and support quality assurance and continuous quality improvement projects.

Requirements

  • Ability to work the hours specified.
  • Visual acuity adequate to perform position duties.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.
  • Ability to hear, understand and distinguish speech and other sounds.
  • Associate's Transcript showing 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of chemistry and biology (must include credit hours in both) or Some College acceptance into an accredited histology certification program.
  • Histotechnician (HT) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification within 1-1/2 years.

Nice To Haves

  • 1-3 years of full time, acceptable experience in a histopathology (clinical, veterinary, industry or research) laboratory from an accredited laboratory within the last five years.

Responsibilities

  • Perform gross on select specimens under the supervision of the Pathologist.
  • Prepare frozen sections, and other immediate attention specimens for intraoperative diagnosis.
  • Perform miscellaneous tasks including but not limited to: routine maintenance, specimen filing, sending reference lab specimens and preparing reagents or solutions.
  • Assist with student teaching and training.
