About The Position

We are seeking a skilled Histology Technician / Histotechnician to perform histological technical procedures using both manual and automated techniques to produce high-quality pathology slides for evaluation by Pathologists. The ideal candidate will have strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, adaptability, and the ability to work accurately in a fast-paced laboratory environment.

Requirements

  • Current New York State Clinical Laboratory Technician License, NYS Histotechnician license/credential, or NYS Physician Assistant (PA) License, as applicable.
  • Education must meet applicable New York State Office of the Professions and CLIA requirements for laboratory testing personnel.
  • Strong understanding of laboratory procedures, quality control, and safety requirements.
  • Ability to accurately perform detailed technical laboratory procedures.

  • Must be able to continuously operate computers, laboratory equipment, and related devices.
  • Requires the ability to concentrate on fine details, including during periods of interruption.
  • Must be able to maintain focus on technical tasks for periods exceeding 60 minutes.
  • Ability to work in a laboratory environment while maintaining accuracy and safety standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Degree in Medical Technology, Histotechnology, Biology, Chemistry, or a related science.
  • At least 1 year of relevant histology experience, preferably in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • ASCP certification preferred.
  • Experience with routine H&E staining, special stains, tissue embedding and sectioning, and immunohistochemistry preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform histological procedures using established manual and automated techniques.
  • Process, embed, and section tissue specimens according to established protocols.
  • Prepare high-quality pathology slides for Pathologist review.
  • Perform routine H&E staining and evaluate slides for consistency and quality.
  • Perform special stains, evaluate results, verify positive controls, and document results.
  • Perform immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining and evaluate staining quality and consistency.
  • Verify positive and negative controls and maintain appropriate documentation.
  • Identify and escalate issues involving specimens, equipment, testing, or results to the appropriate supervisor and Pathologist.
  • Evaluate test results for abnormalities and confirm results according to departmental protocols.
  • Maintain accuracy and quality throughout the pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases of testing.
  • Follow established laboratory testing procedures and maintain accurate testing records.
  • Perform quality control testing and calibration activities.
  • Complete instrument and equipment verification and preventive maintenance.
  • Identify, document, and report problems that may affect test performance.
  • Follow established procedures when testing systems do not meet performance specifications.
  • Document corrective actions when testing systems deviate from established standards.
  • Participate in validations, training, competency assessments, and proficiency testing.
  • Maintain laboratory inventory, including lot numbers, expiration dates, labeling, and quality-control requirements.
  • Participate in regulatory inspections, audits, and laboratory quality programs.
  • Assist with preparation and maintenance of documentation for regulatory compliance.
  • Participate in standard operating procedures, proficiency testing, and reporting of non-conformances.
  • Complete required continuing education, annual training, in-services, and professional development activities.
  • Perform other laboratory duties as assigned.
  • Maintaining accurate quality-control and testing records.
  • Following laboratory quality assurance procedures.
  • Participating in proficiency testing.
  • Supporting regulatory readiness and inspection activities.
  • Participating in quality improvement programs.
  • Documenting non-conformances and corrective actions.
  • Maintaining required continuing education and competency documentation.
