Histology Grossing Assistant

About The Position

This role involves performing a wide variety of tasks within the Histology department, focusing on grossing and processing bone marrow specimens, as well as grossing cytology specimens. The assistant will be responsible for maintaining the organization and cleanliness of the Gross Bays, assisting with various histology procedures such as stainer decons, loading tissue processors, embedding tissue, and performing processor maintenance. Additionally, the role includes cleaning glassware, completing assigned tasks in Accupath, coordinating slides and requisitions, printing blocks, scanning requisitions, labeling and staining bone marrow smears, and answering the lab telephone. The position requires maintaining competency through SOP updates and educational modules, adhering to safety policies and regulations, properly utilizing automated equipment, and safely handling infectious biological specimens and chemicals. The assistant will also learn and apply computer applications, ensure work area coverage, report malfunctioning instrumentation, protect patient confidentiality, and perform other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • Handle infectious biological specimens, caustics, toxic chemicals and/or irritants appropriately and safely
  • Learn and apply computer related applications and programs, including using electronic keyboard and other peripheral devices
  • Adhere to all PBM Safety policies and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state, and federal agencies and accrediting bodies
  • Utilize automated equipment properly according to lab procedures and manufacturers' instructions

Responsibilities

  • Perform a wide variety of tasks in grossing and processing bone marrow specimens
  • Perform grossing for cytology specimens
  • Maintain and organize Gross Bays daily after use
  • Assist Histology department, including but not limited to, stainer decons and daily maintenance, loading tissue processors, embedding tissue, performing processor maintenance, etc.
  • Clean glassware/containers and complete all assigned Accupath tasks
  • Coordinate slides and requisitions to each corresponding facility; Place slides on board for distribution; Distribute slides after QC
  • Print blocks and scan requisitions for bone marrow cases received at night
  • Label, stain, and coverslip bone marrow smears
  • Answer the Lab telephone when staff are unavailable or absent
  • Maintain competency through web-based Standard Operating Procedure updates as well as educational modules
  • Adhere to all PBM Safety policies and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state, and federal agencies and accrediting bodies
  • Utilize automated equipment properly according to lab procedures and manufacturers' instructions
  • Handle infectious biological specimens, caustics, toxic chemicals and/or irritants appropriately and safely
  • Learn and apply computer related applications and programs, including using electronic keyboard and other peripheral devices
  • Ensure work area has proper coverage at all times during the work shift, ie coverage or meal and/or rest periods
  • Immediately notifies supervisory personnel of malfunctioning instrumentation
  • Protects confidentiality of patient information and results at all times
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested
