About The Position

The Histology Assistant in Anatomic Pathology at Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital is a full-time position responsible for performing all necessary procedures related to the accessioning and technical preparation of pathology specimens. This role requires a high degree of technical expertise in handling specimens to ensure diagnostic accuracy. The assistant will also be involved in gross description and dictation of simple surgical specimens, picking up specimens from various hospital locations, and managing the billing and accessioning of specimens through the LIS computer application. Responsibilities include printing labels, answering phones, assisting colleagues and pathologists, preparing Cytology slides (including NONGYN's and Liquid Based PAP's) following quality control standards, staining and coverslipping slides, preparing frozen sections, assisting pathologists in procedures, distributing slides and paperwork, monitoring inventory, and following policies for the storage and disposal of specimens and related materials.

Requirements

High school diploma or Associate degree in a chemical or biological science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution preferred, OR Education/training equivalent to the above that includes the following: 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical technology in any combination AND Laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLS or other organization approved by HHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above), OR at least three months of recorded laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.
One year experience working in Cytology Preparation and/ or Histology Processing preferred, with knowledge of medical terminology.

Responsibilities

Completes Gross description and dictation of simple surgical specimens.
Picks up pathology specimens from various locations throughout the hospital and campus such as surgery, endoscopy, etc.
Responsible for proper handling, accessioning, and billing of all pathology specimens through entering data into the LIS computer application.
Prints labels and work lists.
Answers telephone and assists coworkers, patients, staff, and pathologists as needed.
Demonstrates proficiency and understanding of Cytology preparations and procedures including NONGYN's and Liquid Based PAP's, using established quality control standards to ensure patient safety.
Stains and coverslips all NON-GYN, GYN, and other pathology slides utilizing proper techniques.
Prepares frozen sections including cutting and staining.
Assists Pathologists and Pathologist Assistants in designated procedures.
Distributes slides and paperwork to cytotechnologists or pathologists.
Monitors inventory for Pathology areas.
Follows policy and procedures for storage length and proper disposal of blocks, slides, surgical specimens, requisitions, and reports.
