About The Position

The Histology Assistant II is responsible for receiving FFPE samples into the histology laboratory for preparation for DNA extraction and H&E staining. This position will adhere to all safety, quality controls, and procedures, while learning and performing all functions of histology, pathology, and molecular aspects needed in the laboratory. The role involves assisting in the general upkeep of the laboratory, performing laboratory decontamination, basic preventative maintenance on equipment, and disposing of waste. The assistant will re-stock and distribute supplies, track samples using LIMS and spreadsheets, file and store slides and FFPE tissue blocks, and perform initial quality reviews of incoming specimens. Responsibilities also include labeling FFPE blocks, slides, and DNA tubes, assisting with macrodissection, and recording and maintaining equipment documentation, including QC worksheets and preventive maintenance records. The position requires the ability to apply and integrate feedback, work as part of a team in a fast-paced environment, and maintain strong communication skills. Upholding company mission and values, supporting the Quality Management System, and maintaining reliable attendance are essential. The role requires the ability to work nights and/or weekends as needed, with specific physical requirements including standing for 80% of the day, sitting for 20%, lifting up to 25 pounds, and specific hand/arm movements. Compliance with personal protective equipment requirements and the use of various laboratory equipment are also necessary. Potential exposure to hazardous materials and specimens exists.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • 6+ months of experience working in a laboratory environment.
  • Basic computer skills to include internet navigation and email usage.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates Degree in Science.
  • Experience in a clinical pathology laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the general upkeep of the laboratory, including maintaining sufficient inventory of material, supplies, and equipment, and cleaning glassware and racks.
  • Perform laboratory decontamination using appropriate materials.
  • Perform basic preventative maintenance on equipment according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Dispose of non-biohazard and biohazard waste.
  • Re-stock laboratory and distribute supplies to work areas.
  • Assist with special projects, as needed.
  • Track samples using laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and excel spreadsheets by following standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • File and store slides and FFPE tissue blocks.
  • Assist with the initial quality review of incoming specimens.
  • Label FFPE blocks, slides, and DNA tubes by following SOPs.
  • Assist with macrodissecting by following SOPs.
  • Record all required temperatures in the lab and take corrective actions, as needed.
  • Maintain all histology equipment and corresponding documentation, including QC worksheets, preventive maintenance records, and day-to-day maintenance.
  • Apply and integrate feedback in a professional manner.
  • Provide and receive open and regular feedback and adjust accordingly.
