About The Position

The Hip Hop Lead serves as the primary bridge between the Hip Hop faculty and the Creative Practice leadership during Fall/Spring arts training. This role is responsible for synthesizing the logistical and creative requirements of the Hip Hop Emcee, DJing and Dance programs. As a leader, this role ensures students dive deep into the art of poetry writing and delivery, storytelling, and stage presence while mastering industry-standard tools like BandLab and Logic Pro. This role guides professional Hip Hop Teaching Artists to help young artists shape their signature sound and authenticity.

Requirements

  • Must be present on Saturdays during the entire program
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience teaching and leading a hip hop program
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • Proficiency with DAW software and ability to DJ and MC
  • Experience working with entry-level hip hop students to support their growth and a genuine enthusiasm for arts education and engagement

Responsibilities

  • Gather and prioritize needs from Teaching Artists (TAs) and Education Assistants (EAs) within the Hip Hop programs.
  • Elevate high-priority needs, such as specific technical or software requirements, to the site-based Creative Practice Team Member.
  • Maintain regular communication with faculty and the Director of Creative Practice to ensure programmatic alignment.
  • Submit all classroom, hardware, and software needs (e.g., MIDI controllers, microphones, or software licenses) for the faculty to the Director of Creative Practice by the Thursday deadline - two days prior to Saturday program.
  • Document and relay technical requirements for live performances, recording sessions, and masterclasses to ensure successful execution.
  • Manage the arrangement of substitute teachers and provide direct classroom coverage or instructional support during unexpected absences.
  • Recommend TAs and EAs with expertise in hip hop culture and digital production to support program growth.
  • Work with the Director of Curriculum to ensure the effective use of BandLab and Logic Pro and stage presence within the curriculum, balancing technical mastery with creative flow.
  • Support faculty in delivering training that covers rhythm, storytelling, and stage presence, ensuring a high standard of "creativity, skill, and authenticity."
  • Coordinate private coaching sessions and masterclasses, ensuring these opportunities are integrated smoothly into the student experience.
  • Observe faculty on their classroom instruction and provide feedback in consultation with the Director of Curriculum.
  • Serve as a consistent presence at the program site, modeling professional standards for the faculty and students.
  • Lead or participate in hip-hop-specific faculty meetings to ensure the collective vision for emceeing and production is realized across all sessions.
  • Be present for the entirety of the Saturday program.
