About The Position

Weiser Memorial Hospital--rated as one of Idaho's best places to work--is looking to hire a HIMS Technician I to join our team. The HIMS Technician I reviews medical records after discharge for completeness in compliance with the hospital’s bylaws, federal and state requirements. Assures that patient abstracts are correctly entered into the medical record deficiency system. To ensure that all medical record requests are processed as requested. Coordinates record review and assists requesters with access to and release of information. The HIMS Technician responds to requests for medical information by performing duties in accordance with established hospital and departmental policy and state and federal laws. Processes incoming and outgoing mail each day.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of CAH standards and state medical record requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Medical terminology and Health Information Management, preferred.
  • 1 or more years of previous similar hospital experience, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Scans loose filing into appropriate medical record daily.
  • Combines current patient medical record with any previous patient discharges for a unit record.
  • Analyzes medical records for completeness and accuracy according to department and hospital policy and procedures.
  • Responsible for weekly updating and dissemination of deficiencies/delinquencies to physicians and allied health professionals responsible for providing the missing chart content.
  • Enters deficiency into the computer.
  • Must be able to keep up with workload.
  • Be able to process medical records according to department productivity goals.
  • Pulls verbal medical record requests within 24 hours of receipt.
  • Answers telephone in a timely and polite manner.
  • Performs performance improvement functions through documentation collection and review.
  • Performs performance improvement audits on medical record(s) as directed by the manager.
  • Responsible for coordinating the release of medical information to insurance companies and lawyers.
  • Processes subpoenas and court orders.
  • Maintains inactive records and purges according to departmental and/or hospital policy and procedure.
  • Retrieve data for trauma and tumor registry annually.
  • Maintains medical record scanning template.
  • Verifies authorizations in accordance with hospital policy and procedures and state and federal laws.
  • Responsible for maintaining security and confidentiality regulations for record access and review.
  • Consults manager or supervisor of any unusual request.
  • All requests for records are stamped with date received and logged in the correspondence computer.
  • Notifies requester when records available.
  • Receives sorts and delivers all departmental mail to appropriate personnel each day.
  • Maintains a good working relationship within the department and other departments.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of computer system.
  • Willing to accept additional assignments.
