About The Position

The Health Information Management (HIM) Technician is responsible for the day-to-day tasks required to maintain the integrity of the health record. The role of the HIM Technician is integral to the overall function of the health system and patient care, ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of available information for providers. The HIM Technician works under close supervision of the HIM Director.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Health Information Management (HIM)
  • Active Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification required.
  • Experience working with electronic health records required.
  • Verbal and writing ability required to communicate effectively in informing employees of activities and policies.
  • Numerical ability required.
  • Ability to receive, comprehend, and carry out instructions; ability to work safely with equipment, supplies, and materials; ability to comply with attendance requirements; ability to comply with Human Resource policies.

Nice To Haves

  • 1–3 years of experience in Health Information Management, medical records, health information services, data integrity, or a related healthcare environment preferred.
  • Experience with medical record review, data quality, release of information, patient identity management, or documentation compliance preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes complex health information data for completeness, accuracy, and consistency; identifies discrepancies and supports ongoing compliance with CMS, The Joint Commission, Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, and other applicable requirements.
  • Performs specialized and varied administrative and clerical functions that support the accurate, timely maintenance of the electronic health record.
  • Scans and indexes paper and faxed documents that are part of the legal medical record, ensuring each document is assigned to the correct patient account and document type with accuracy, timeliness, and consistency.
  • Assist with the identification and resolution of EHR documentation and data discrepancies.
  • Supports Medical Staff in completing deficient or incomplete records by monitoring requirements, communicating needed actions, and helping prevent suspension of medical staff privileges.
  • Maintains the integrity of the Master Patient Index by reviewing patient identity information, identifying potential duplicate or overlay records, and supporting accurate patient-to-record matching.
  • Processes requests for confidential health information in a timely and accurate manner, verifying authorization and releasing only permitted information in accordance with the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules, the Texas Health and Safety Code, and other applicable requirements.
  • Ensure information is released accurately, securely, and within established turnaround times.
  • Safeguards health records and protected health information by following established security, access, and handling procedures to maintain confidentiality and prevent unauthorized disclosure.
  • Identifies system or workflow deficiencies, investigates reported issues to determine contributing factors, and recommends practical process improvements to the manager.
  • Monitors and manages assigned work queues each day, reviews electronic health record reports, and follows up on outstanding items to support timely and accurate completion of work.
  • Requests, verifies, and compiles required birth certificate information for timely and accurate entry into the Texas Electronic Vital Events Registration System (TxEVER), in accordance with State of Texas requirements.
  • Maintains health records throughout their lifecycle in accordance with current federal, state, and local laws, organizational policies, retention guidelines, and regulations governing medical records.
  • Ensure health information is appropriately classified and stored.
  • Maintains current knowledge of HIM department applications, workflows, and operational practices; serves as a resource to HIM leadership, staff, providers, and external departments by answering questions, troubleshooting issues, and helping resolve workflow concerns.
