About The Position

This position is responsible for providing HIM support in maintaining the Department’s paper and electronic health record system. The HIM Specialist Sr will have an understanding of privacy and security guidelines related to patient information and maintain HIPAA as well as keep all patient information confidential. The key duties of this position rely heavily on the ability to learn, and navigate efficiently within, an electronic health record. The incumbent must be able to communicate both orally and in writing clearly and effectively in the English language; able to work in a fast-paced environment; and develop sound professional working relationships. This position is responsible for advanced functions within the Health Information Management Department.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in keyboard operations, Microsoft Office applications, and other required software.
  • Ability to establish and maintain long-term customer relationships, building trust and respect by consistently meeting and exceeding expectations.
  • Understanding of the importance of providing privacy and security of all patient information.
  • Knowledge of Vital Statistics, including birth certificates and paternity acknowledgments.
  • Ability to establish courses of action to ensure work is completed efficiently; proactively prioritize assignments and multi-task.
  • Ability to accomplish tasks by considering all areas involved, showing concern for all aspects of the job, accurately checking processes and tasks, and being watchful over a period of time.
  • Ability to be self-supporting and not rely on others to complete a job.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to efficiently use computer keyboard and mouse to perform coding assignments.
  • Ability to lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) years’ experience in a hospital Health Information Management Department.
  • RHIT or RHIA Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Prepping, scanning, and quality review/validation/indexing of documents.
  • Analyzing medical records for completion and assigning/reassigning provider deficiencies.
  • Supporting missing documentation and provider queries.
  • Completing birth and/or death certificates in accordance with state law.
  • Chart pick up (rounding) and reconciliation.
  • Performing data integrity duties (chart correction, duplicate medical records, etc.).
  • Meeting productivity expectations based on job function.
  • Maintaining productivity metrics and time for productivity monitoring.
  • Assisting internal and outside agencies with patient record information.
  • Answering phones, processing continuity of care requests, record retrieval, and record filing.
  • Carrying out supervisory responsibilities including interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints, and resolving problems.
