The HIM Coding-Specialist II is responsible for coding and charging hospital and provider practice encounter records according to accepted coding guidelines, correct coding initiatives, standards of ethical coding, and policies and procedures. This role involves coding for both Inpatient and Outpatient services, ensuring appropriate documentation is available for accurate coding, and querying providers or staff for clarification when necessary. The specialist also verifies medical necessity for tests, checks APCs, may perform coding audits, and works to minimize coding backlogs. Maintaining coding certification and continuing education requirements are essential, as is safeguarding confidentiality and adhering to all organizational policies, including HIPAA. The position requires effective communication with patients, families, and colleagues, and general knowledge of HIM departmental functions.
