About The Position

The HIM Coding-Specialist II is responsible for coding and charging hospital and provider practice encounter records according to accepted coding guidelines, correct coding initiatives, standards of ethical coding, and policies and procedures. This role involves coding for both Inpatient and Outpatient services, ensuring appropriate documentation is available for accurate coding, and querying providers or staff for clarification when necessary. The specialist also verifies medical necessity for tests, checks APCs, may perform coding audits, and works to minimize coding backlogs. Maintaining coding certification and continuing education requirements are essential, as is safeguarding confidentiality and adhering to all organizational policies, including HIPAA. The position requires effective communication with patients, families, and colleagues, and general knowledge of HIM departmental functions. Employees are expected to uphold the highest standards of integrity, ethical behavior, and regulatory compliance.

Requirements

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent required for all positions (may be allowed to sign a GED agreement to obtain within 6 months).
  • Anything required must be verified before hire.
  • CPC/CPC-A or willingness to test within one year.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous HIM/coding experience preferred.
  • Computer experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Codes/charges Hospital and Provider Practice encounter records following accepted coding guidelines, correct coding initiatives, standards of ethical coding and policies and procedures.
  • Performs Hospital based coding to include Inpatient and Outpatient services.
  • Assures appropriate documentation is available for complete and accurate coding.
  • Queries provider or appropriate staff for coding clarification as required and obtain necessary documentation as indicated.
  • Checks for medical necessity for required tests and codes based on documentation in the record.
  • Verifies APC's.
  • May perform coding audits on occasion.
  • Works coding backlog reports as required to keep coding backlog to a minimum.
  • Maintains coding certification.
  • Compliant with requirements for continuing education.
  • Safeguards confidentiality.
  • Follows coding guidelines, correct coding initiatives, standards of ethical coding and policies and procedures.
  • Follows HIPAA, compliance, and all organizational policies.
  • Answers phone promptly with a friendly, professional tone.
  • Communicate with visitors, co-workers and medical staff in a friendly, professional manner.
  • Respectful to all.
  • General knowledge of HIM departmental functions.
  • Attends mandatory and other pertinent in-services as well as educational in-services to maintain credentials & competency.
  • May cover for charge specialist if indicated.

  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Frequently accesses email to stay up to date on information within the organization to provide a way of communication between staff members.
