About The Position

Responsible for translating healthcare providers’ diagnostic and procedural statements into coded form. Coding staff do this by reviewing and analyzing health records to identify relevant diagnoses and procedures for distinct patient encounters. The coding function is the primary source for data and information used in health care, and promotes provider/patient continuity, accurate database information, and the ability to optimize reimbursement. The coding function also ensures compliance with established coding guidelines, third party reimbursement policies, and regulations.

Requirements

  • Certified Coding Associate certificate (CCA) from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or the Certified Professional Coder Associate certificate (CPC-A) from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC); or other certification from AHIMA or AAPC CCS-P, CCS, RHIT, RHIA, CPC, COC, CIC.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to operate a code-finder.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's degree
  • Completion of coding training to include anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, basic ICD 10-CM/PCS diagnostic/procedural and basic CPT coding.
  • One year of experience in a medical related setting.

Responsibilities

  • Codes and abstracts diagnoses and patient information from outpatient ancillary encounters and enters data into the hospital information system.
  • Verifies abstracted hospital information fields for accuracy and completeness, correcting as appropriate based upon information obtained from the paper medical record.
  • Monitors daily data printout to assure completion of all outpatient records requiring coding and abstracting.
  • Prioritizes outpatient and inpatient coding and abstracting responsibilities so that coding is kept current.
  • Communicates with physicians or physician office staff when documentation is unclear or insufficient to complete the coding process.
  • Maintains coding proficiency through self-directed continuing education.
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends, updates and changes in coding policy and procedure.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and services appropriate to the population served on the assigned unit or work area.
