About The Position

As a Highway Technician Senior, based out of the Grimes Resident Construction Engineer Office, you will spend your day making roads safer through sampling, testing, and inspecting construction projects year-round. You will contribute your knowledge and skills towards the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Mission - Making Lives Better Through Transportation and our five CORE values: Safety First, People Matter, Customer Focused, Servant Leadership, and Integrity Without Exception. While a CDL permit is required upon hire, you must have Class A and endorsements/restrictions on your CDL within 5 months following your hire date. CDL Training for Iowa Department of Transportation employees is provided! Entry Level Driver Training is available if you do not already possess Class A and endorsements/restrictions on your CDL for positions that require it. Those eligible will receive both hands-on Behind-the-Wheel Range and Road training and web-based Theory training to meet required state and federal regulations.

Requirements

  • A CDL permit upon hire.
  • A Class A and endorsements/restrictions on your CDL within 5 months following your hire date.
  • A successful U.S. DOT Clearinghouse query.
  • A pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.
  • A pre-employment drug screen and will be required to participate in ongoing random drug and alcohol testing programs.
  • Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency, and experience equal to four years of fulltime work in highway maintenance, equipment operation, construction inspection, field work in engineering survey, or materials inspection and testing.
  • A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of post-high-school education in highway maintenance, equipment operation, construction inspection, field work in engineering survey, or materials inspection and testing equals one year of full-time experience.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes eighteen months of full-time work as a Highway Technician or Construction Technician.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes twenty-four months of full-time work as a Highway Technician Associate.
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Learner’s Permit upon hire.
  • Must obtain and subsequently maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority.
  • Must pass a post offer, pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.
  • Employees must be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours.

Nice To Haves

  • Employees may be required to obtain and maintain Herbicide Applicator certification from the Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.
  • Positions require certification for testing materials and operating specialized equipment as required by the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Technical Training and Certification Program for Highway Materials and Construction; and/or other certifications as required.
  • Employees may be required to attend a comprehensive bridge inspection course required by the National Bridge Inspection Standards.

Responsibilities

  • Completing inspections on highway construction projects
  • Maintaining detailed records of all project activities such as vouchers, as-builts, and progress reports
  • Acting as the liaison with Iowa DOT staff, government officials, contractors, and the public
  • Performing mathematical calculations to ensure compliance with project plans, percentage complete, quantity used, and areas measured
  • Ensuring that work is completed according to the plans, specifications, and contract documents
  • Performing basic office administration via technical devices and software
  • Overseeing teammates assigned to specific projects
  • Coordinating routine maintenance and service of DOT equipment and vehicles
  • Operating snow and ice removal equipment
