About The Position

The selected candidate will be required to reside within 45 minutes of an Iowa DOT Maintenance Garage in District 2. Acceptable Garages are as follows: Swea City, Algona, Garner, Clarion, Latimer, Hanlontown, Mason City, Charles City, Osage, New Hampton, Waverly, Allison, Waterloo, Elkader, West Union, Decorah, and Waukon. As a D2 Bridge Highway Technician Senior, you will work as part of a four-person crew responsible for evaluating, maintaining, and repairing bridges to keep Iowa’s roadways safe and reliable. In this role, you will support the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Mission - Making Lives Better Through Transportation and uphold our core values: Safety First, People Matter, Customer Focused, Servant Leadership, and Integrity Without Exception. Shift: 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday, hours may vary and subject to call 24 hours a day during emergency and/or weather conditions; occasional overnight travel. You will join a skilled team dedicated to maintaining roughly 640 bridges in District 2.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency, and experience equal to four years of fulltime work in highway maintenance, equipment operation, construction inspection, field work in engineering survey, or materials inspection and testing.
  • A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of post-high-school education in highway maintenance, equipment operation, construction inspection, field work in engineering survey, or materials inspection and testing equals one year of full-time experience.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes eighteen months of full-time work as a Highway Technician or Construction Technician.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes twenty-four months of full-time work as a Highway Technician Associate.
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Learner’s Permit upon hire.
  • Must obtain a valid Commercial Driver’s License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and participate in ongoing random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Must have a post offer, pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.
  • Must be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours.
  • Employees must arrange transportation to and from assigned work areas.
  • Employees must respond to emergency situations as required.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of or ability to learn bridge terminology/design characteristics and maintenance/repair procedures and techniques.
  • May be required to obtain pesticide/herbicide certifications or other certifications as needed.
  • May be required to obtain Herbicide Applicator certification from the Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.
  • Positions require certification for testing materials and operating specialized equipment as required by the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Technical Training and Certification Program for Highway Materials and Construction; and/or other certifications as required.
  • Within a period of time after hire, as determined by the appointing authority, employees in this class may be required to attend a comprehensive bridge inspection course required by the National Bridge Inspection Standards.

Responsibilities

  • Operating specialist mechanical and electronic equipment, including concrete mixers, vibrators, jackhammers, detect delamination devices, and drills/coring machines for retrofitting fatigue cracks in steel members.
  • Assisting the District bridge crew leader and District Operations Manager with coordination of work, planning schedules, guiding crew members, and overseeing field operations.
  • Supporting bridge maintenance and repair by assessing bridge conditions, performing repairs, addressing fatigue cracks in steel components, and preparing sketches and photographs documenting deficiencies.
  • Providing on-the-job training for local maintenance garage staff involved in bridge repair activities.
  • Inspecting and assessing the extent of bridge damage, tracking the status of corrective recommendations contained in Bridge Condition Reports.
  • Attending a comprehensive bridge inspection course required by the National Bridge Inspection Standards within a period of time designated by the appointing authority at the time of appointment.
  • Operating equipment/performs physical activities in the maintenance of roadway, roadside, right of way, shoulder, bridge, and grading/paving projects
  • Completing routine maintenance and service of DOT equipment and vehicles
  • Operating computers and applying related software applications
  • Reading and applying Traffic Control Standards to assist motorists and maintain safe work zones
  • Operating snow and ice removal equipment
