About The Position

Our Highway Technician Senior for the Paint Crew plays a vital role in leading daily pavement-marking operations and supporting the team in advancing our mission: Making Lives Better Through Transportation. In this position, you’ll help uphold the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Core Values: Safety First, People Matter, Customer Focused, Servant Leadership, and Integrity Without Exception. This role provides a great blend of leadership and hands-on work. You’ll guide and coordinate the paint crew’s activities while also working alongside your team to ensure high-quality, safe, and efficient roadway marking operations. While a CDL permit is required upon hire, you must have Class A and endorsements / restrictions on your CDL within 5 months following your hire date. CDL Training for Iowa Department of Transportation employees is provided! Entry Level Driver Training is available if you do not already possess Class A and endorsements / restrictions on your CDL for positions that require it. Those eligible will receive both hands-on Behind-the-Wheel Range and Road training, with web-based Theory training, to fulfill required state and federal regulations.

Requirements

  • A CDL permit upon hire.
  • Class A and endorsements/restrictions on your CDL within 5 months following your hire date.
  • A successful U.S. DOT Clearinghouse query.
  • A pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.
  • A pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in random drug and alcohol testing programs.
  • Positions require certification for testing materials and operating specialized equipment as required by the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Technical Training and Certification Program for Highway Materials and Construction; and/or other certifications as required.
  • Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency, and experience equal to four years of fulltime work in highway maintenance, equipment operation, construction inspection, field work in engineering survey, or materials inspection and testing.
  • A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of post-high-school education in highway maintenance, equipment operation, construction inspection, field work in engineering survey, or materials inspection and testing equals one year of full-time experience.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes eighteen months of full-time work as a Highway Technician or Construction Technician.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes twenty-four months of full-time work as a Highway Technician Associate.
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Learner’s Permit upon hire.
  • Within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority, a valid Commercial Driver’s License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and subsequently maintained to continue employment.
  • In conjunction with Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (parts 40 and 382), this job requires a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employer’s random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to the regulations regarding the Federal drug and alcohol testing program.
  • Prior to starting employment, all persons are required to have a post offer, pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.
  • Within a period of time after hire, as determined by the appointing authority, employees in this class may be required to obtain and maintain Herbicide Applicator certification from the Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.
  • Within a period of time after hire, as determined by the appointing authority, employees in this class may be required to attend a comprehensive bridge inspection course required by the National Bridge Inspection Standards.
  • Employees must be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours.

Responsibilities

  • Operates the curb-marker and long-line paint truck and performs all pavement-marking duties, including monitoring application controls such as flow meters, timers, counters, and pressure/temperature gauges.
  • Maintains and performs daily service on paint equipment, including guns, solenoids, pumps, filters, and paint/bead tanks, ensuring proper function and reliability.
  • Performs roadway, roadside, right-of-way, shoulder, bridge, and grading/paving maintenance using appropriate equipment and physical labor.
  • Completes routine service and maintenance on DOT vehicles and equipment and uses computers/software to support daily tasks.
  • Responds to roadway emergencies and applies Traffic Control Standards to provide safe guidance for motorists.
  • Works in adverse weather conditions and operates snow and ice removal equipment during winter operations.
  • May obtain pesticide/herbicide or other certifications required for maintenance or construction inspection.
