The Department of Transportation (DOT) is seeking a Highway Repairer for its Office of Emergency Response (OER) Unit, which operates 24/7 to address incidents and crises that compromise the structural integrity, public safety, or flow of transportation infrastructure in New York City. This role involves responding to and correcting infrastructure conditions, often during emergencies or inclement weather, to ensure the safety of vehicular, bicycling, and pedestrian traffic. The candidate will perform emergency maintenance and repair work on bridges, arterials, and roadways, including asphalt work, backfilling, and sign installation/repair. Responsibilities also include patrolling city arterials, general laboring, restoring plumbers cuts, installing/repairing fences and guide/guard rails, and cutting out defective areas for patching. The position requires familiarity with various hand, electrical, gas, and power tools, as well as motorized vehicles and tow equipment. The candidate may need to secure scenes with safety apparatuses, work in confined spaces, and prepare written and electronic reports. Additionally, they will monitor radio frequencies, communicate via a two-way radio system, coordinate with city agencies and contractors, assist with Vision Zero initiatives, and participate in training sessions. The role may require working unscheduled or extended tours, including weekends and holidays.
