About The Position

The Department of Transportation (DOT) is seeking a Highway Repairer for its Office of Emergency Response (OER) Unit, which operates 24/7 to address incidents and crises that compromise the structural integrity, public safety, or flow of transportation infrastructure in New York City. This role involves responding to and correcting infrastructure conditions, often during emergencies or inclement weather, to ensure the safety of vehicular, bicycling, and pedestrian traffic. The candidate will perform emergency maintenance and repair work on bridges, arterials, and roadways, including asphalt work, backfilling, and sign installation/repair. Responsibilities also include patrolling city arterials, general laboring, restoring plumbers cuts, installing/repairing fences and guide/guard rails, and cutting out defective areas for patching. The position requires familiarity with various hand, electrical, gas, and power tools, as well as motorized vehicles and tow equipment. The candidate may need to secure scenes with safety apparatuses, work in confined spaces, and prepare written and electronic reports. Additionally, they will monitor radio frequencies, communicate via a two-way radio system, coordinate with city agencies and contractors, assist with Vision Zero initiatives, and participate in training sessions. The role may require working unscheduled or extended tours, including weekends and holidays.

Requirements

  • Serving permanently in the title of Highway Repairer.
  • Three years of full-time experience as an Assistant City Highway Repairer; or
  • Three years of full-time experience acquired within the last 5 years in roadway maintenance and repair using asphalt and concrete mixes, performing the functions of a Highway Repairer; or
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to '1' or '2' above.
  • Possess a Class B Commercial Driver License valid for air brakes, valid in the State of New York at the time of appointment.
  • Must maintain a Class B Commercial Driver License for the duration of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Some knowledge or background operating motorized vehicles, tow equipment and various attachments.
  • Familiarity in the use of various hand, electrical, gas and power tools.

Responsibilities

  • Complete tasks of emergency bridge, arterial or roadway maintenance & repair work with asphalt or back fill of depressions and excavations as needed.
  • Install, repair or remove signs on highways, city bridges and streets.
  • Patrol Citywide arterials.
  • Perform general laboring tasks.
  • Restoration of plumbers cuts.
  • Install, repair fences, guide/guard rails.
  • Cut out defective areas for patching.
  • Secure a scene with various safety apparatuses, equipment, and signage.
  • Work in confined/small spaces in an isolated/remote location for long periods of time.
  • Prepare various reports written and electronically.
  • Monitor Radio Frequencies, answer Radio calls according to Federal Communication Commission and OER Standard Operating Procedure.
  • Transmit information to Communication Center and field personnel via 2 way radio system.
  • Coordinate with city, state and contractors while organizing intra-agency response to incidents and emergencies.
  • Assist DOT with citywide Vision Zero initiatives including crash investigation incidents.
  • Participate in training sessions as necessary.
  • Work unscheduled or extended tours as needed on weekends or holidays.
