About The Position

The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is seeking a Professional Land Surveyor / Registered Land Surveyor to primarily perform in-office reviews of Highway Right of Way (ROW) plans, legal descriptions and other documents prepared by others to help ensure that information accurately reflects available surveys, and deeds and are aligned with acceptable land surveying practices. Requirements

  • Registration as a Professional Land Surveyor as defined by the Nebraska Board of Examiners for Land Surveyors is required. Applicants must be registered at the time of application or be able to obtain such a license within 90 days of employment.
  • He or she has successfully passed an examination designed to determine his or her proficiency and qualification to engage in the practice of land surveying.
  • No applicant shall be entitled to take such examination until he or she shows the necessary practical experience in land surveying work; and He or she has not less than six years of surveying experience of which five years must be as defined in subdivision (4) of section 81-8,109, and three of such five years must have been in a responsible position as a subordinate to a licensed land surveyor, OR has graduated, after a course of not less than four years in surveying, engineering, or other approved curriculum, with proportionate credit for lesser time, from a school or college approved by the examining board as of satisfactory standing and has an additional two years of practice in a responsible position.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in creation, interpretation, and the laying out of survey plats and land parcel descriptions contained in instruments of conveyance.
  • Experience in utilizing Trimble GPS receiver and Trimble Business center Software for the completion of land Surveys.
  • Experience in the discovery of land survey monuments, and record research for the discovery research.
  • Experience working with NDOT or County Surveyors for land surveys.
  • Experience in preparation of scope of work, estimate of hours, and expenses for contracted work.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a complete land survey including, but not limited to, finding existing land corners along the project. The surveyor must also determine the validity of these corners prior to acceptance. This work shall be done in accordance with the Land Surveyors Regulation Act in effect at the time of the survey.
  • This survey will be used to determine the location of the existing Right of Way on NDOT projects and also be used to compose legal descriptions for new Right of Way acquisitions.
  • Use departmental software to create or review ROW plans, sketches, legal descriptions, tract maps, staking reports, and other ROW information as needed.
  • Use Departmental software to download and process survey data.
  • Research and use available survey records, courthouse records, and other information to establish or represent property lines, right of way lines, and ownerships.
  • Approve land survey plats and land corner ties to assure conformance with the Land Surveyors Regulation Act in effect at the time of the survey.
  • Provide professional surveying opinions, guidance, recommendations, and witness testimony for legal staff.
  • Communicate with county and private surveyors on the location of land corners.
  • Interpret information contained in surveys and instruments of conveyance.
  • Restore missing land corners in accordance with the Land Surveyors Regulation Act in effect at the time of the survey. This work requires coordination and approval by the appropriate county surveyor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
