Highway Maintenance Worker II - Temporary Assignment
About The Position
Milwaukee County Department of Transportation is seeking a Highway Maintenance Worker II for a temporary assignment. This full-time, seasonal position will perform unskilled or semi-skilled construction-related labor in the highway maintenance division on State, County, and Interstate Highways. The role involves operating various construction equipment, performing snow removal, repairing pavement and bridges, maintaining rights-of-way, directing traffic, and repairing safety appurtenances. Requirements
- Current resident of Wisconsin.
- Possession of a High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
- Valid Wisconsin CDL with Class B Endorsement and no airbrake restriction REQUIRED at the time of application, and able to be maintained during employment.
- Able to push, pull, lift, and carry up to 60lbs.

- Previous construction experience.
- Previous experience driving CDL rated vehicles or equipment.
Responsibilities
- Operate various forms of construction equipment including dual axle and tandem axle dump trucks, milling machines, front end loaders, vac-alls, roller compactor, anti-icing units, sewer jetter, tar kettle, and various mower sand bucket trucks.
- Check lights, fluids, and overall vehicle condition, wash vehicles, and maintain flail mowers, vac-alls, tar kettles, arrow boards, road work signs, and hand tools.
- Apply chemicals, anti-ice, and salt for snow removal.
- Snowplow using dual axle or tandem axle dump trucks, front end loaders, and rubber tire skid steers.
- Perform winter road patrolling and snow fence installation.
- Mill and air hammer asphalt for prep and replacement.
- Remove concrete slabs, perform prep and replacement.
- Perform pothole repair and shoulder repair and maintenance.
- Use other construction related equipment for pavement and bridge maintenance.
- Mow grass on Interstate, State, and County trunk Highways and Rights-of-Way.
- Perform median mowing and trimming with various mowers.
- Cut and chip trees along state and county roads and interstates.
- Clean culverts and ditches of debris to ensure proper water flow.
- Maintain gas trimmers and chainsaws.
- Sign and cone for lane and road closures on Interstate, State, and County Trunk Highways in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Repair guard rail barrier walls, tau systems, smart cushions, attenuator barrels, and fences.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
