About The Position

Under supervision of the Highway Maintenance Supervisor, this role is responsible for performing journeyman level automotive/heavy equipment mechanics and welding. The position involves general labor duties on Road and Bridge projects, including asphalt patching, mowing, culvert bed preparation, snow removal, and maintenance of gravel and paved roadways. Responsibilities also include preventive maintenance and upkeep of equipment, operating various heavy machinery safely, and potentially acting as a Team Lead (Straw Boss) on small crews.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED certified
  • 18 years of age or above
  • Ability to read and write
  • Possess and retain a CDL Class A driver’s license with N. endorsement without the air brake restrictions, as issued by the Driver’s License Division of the State of North Dakota
  • No serious driving convictions, based on established department criteria
  • Must live within an approximate 60-minutes response time to the assigned shop.
  • Successfully complete a standard background and criminal record check
  • Successfully complete an alcohol and controlled substance test
  • Successfully complete a physical exam
  • Must already be authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis

Nice To Haves

  • Two or more years’ experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker I or other construction related work using all the essential skills and equipment needed in this position.

Responsibilities

  • Performs general labor duties on Road and Bridge projects including asphalt patching, mowing, culvert bed preparation, snow removal, gravel, and paved roadway maintenance.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and upkeep of equipment.
  • Operates power tools, trucks, motor graders, front-end loaders, bulldozers, and other heavy equipment in a safe manner.
  • Acts as Team Lead (Straw Boss) on small, temporary crews as assigned by supervisor.
  • Participates with other maintenance personnel to perform general labor duties using hand tools including shovels, rakes, posthole diggers, brooms, scrapers, etc.
  • Participates in asphalt patching and preparing culvert beds.
  • Places traffic control signs and devices, performing flagging duties as required.
  • Operates jackhammers, air compressors, mechanical tampers, power saws, hydraulic drivers, and similar equipment.
  • Operates side dump, belly dump, and read dump trucks hauling maintenance materials.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as motor graders, front end loaders, bulldozers, scrapers, backhoes, and trucks of all types.
  • Operates asphalt related equipment, rollers, and other equipment associated with road and bridge maintenance.
  • Performs repair, cleaning, and maintenance of vehicles.
  • Conducts snow removal and sanding/traction material applications as needed.
  • Performs show and grounds maintenance as required, including mowing, and weed eating.
  • Generates detailed daily timecards, material, and work reports.
  • Observes established safety practices and procedures when working with tools and equipment.
  • Ensures equipment is in good operating condition by adjusting and performing routine maintenance as operating results and conditions require.
  • Creates a positive and productive work atmosphere by communicating and maintaining a professional manner with supervisors, employees, and the public.
  • Prepares daily work reports and records equipment maintenance activities.
