About The Position

This position serves the public by contributing to making Ohio's roads safer. The selected candidate will be placed in the classification in which they meet the minimum qualifications. The role involves performing a variety of highway maintenance activities, participating in snow and ice operations, and potentially other duties beyond the listed examples. Training will be provided to obtain CDL licensure if the candidate is not already licensed.

Requirements

  • For Highway Maintenance Worker 1: Formal education in arithmetic (addition & subtraction) and in reading, writing, & speaking common English vocabulary. Must obtain Class B Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement without airbrake restriction.
  • For Highway Technician 1: Formal education in arithmetic (addition & subtraction, decimals, percentages & fractions); ability to read, write & speak common English vocabulary; 3 months training or 3 months experience in operation of basic equipment. Valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement without airbrake restriction.
  • All candidates must be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Must register as a driver in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse.
  • Must undergo a criminal background check.
  • Must undergo urinalysis to test for illegal drug use.
  • Must comply with federal testing regulations pursuant to 49 CFR Part 40 and 49 CFR Part 382, which prohibit the use of marijuana, including medical marijuana.

  • Perform a variety of highway maintenance activities, such as flagging, pothole patching, repairing guardrails, litter pickup, and mowing.
  • Participate in snow and ice operations to ensure safe travel during winter conditions.
